Sounds like a great idea. Just make sure you don't sign anything. Remember, unless you sign over the copyrights, you still own it.

Just wanted to add that I've been getting a lot of calls lately from people needing a shooter at the last minute (call comes sometimes 20 minutes before the shoot) because they posted an ad like this on CL and thought they found someone to do it for nothing only to have the guy not show up on the shoot day. I charge my normal rate plus 20% on these calls and don't hand over ANYTHING until I'm paid in full. Most have been paying with cash on-site after the shoot since I won't turn over anything until I've deposited any checks and they clear the bank with no issues. Its been working out nicely.
I would also like to add that some of these clients end up being very big companies that had the budget but thought they could get it cheap or for free by trying CL. Many see if they can get if for nothing but have no problem paying if it doesn't work out for them. Seems to be a new trend.

Here's an optimist from the Raleigh, NC cragislist:
"Looking for a college student, filmmaker or still photographer interested in building her/ his action/video/film portfolio with a comedy/satire commercial I've developed. I'm an advertising professional of over 15 years and will use it for my own self-promotion. I will also give you onscreen credit. Will involve at least two on-camera actors, a simple white sweep, possibly some guerrilla filming in a local store. One day shoot, max. No pay, but great for your portfolio. Will post on YouTube and other social media. You should get plenty of leads for more work this way, too."
Wow. No pay, but he'll use it for his own self promotion. AND, you'll get to risk arrest for trespassing with the camera! But hey...it'll generate plenty of other opportunities to work for free...
