Long term gigs

I got a call yesterday, out of the blue, looking to book me for 4 months. I had that great and oh crap moment.

Its a wonderful offer, except I have several other pretty nice jobs lined up over the next 6 weeks that I would hate to give up. Then there is leaving my family (two kids, 7 and 4) for the entire summer forcing my wife to be a single parent. What to do on this one?

This would be a neat experience. Definitely a resume builder and learning experience. Pay would be outstanding. But, I have about 10 days be on set. 6 of which I am out of town.

With such short notice, I don’t think I can pull this off. I am not mentally or physically ready. There is not enough time to prep my office for self automation for the next 4 months. On the other hand it would be consistent work over a long period of time. How have you guys handled this type of situation?

Sure the income would be a nice benefit. I travel a lot for clients but usually 3-4 days at a time not months. I was taken back because my wife didn’t have her usual –hell no– attitude when I brought it up. That is surprising because I have been traveling a lot the last 6 weeks and she was looking forward to having me home now that school is out and the kids activities have started.

I understand families live apart from time to time. Military families especially. Shooting video is not nearly a noble, is much safer and only for 4 months instead of a year plus deployment. But it is still 4 months. And my work base is growing. If I a unavailable for that long will those clients dry up?
