thing is.. if it's that dangerous... remember they let it go UP in the first place. if there had been an accident during that launch all that "dangerous stuff" would be all over the atmosphere at a much lower altitude.

How many years ago did NASA release info that they were about to launch a nuclear-powered rocket or something with a nuclear payload that would go around the sun to accelerate... and there was a big kerfuffle over that. Does anyone remember?

I remember that one. Lots of protests as at the time NASA were having all sorts of problems with launches, I seem to remember a lot of accidents.
It was a design fault, really minor which took ages to find. The nuclear bird was the first to use the newly modified launch platform (rocket)
When that bird went up a lot of people at Mission control Houston had tight butt cheeks clenched together until it was out of the atmosphere.
