Today I....

...stood out in the freezing cold for about an hour waiting on some guy to come down from a cell phone tower.

For some reason after he wrecked his stolen car while being pursued by the cops and causing a sheriffs deputy to crash his cruiser, he decided to climb a cell phone tower in order to evade the authorities. The police called in "negotiators" two cops an assault rifle and a German shepherd attack dog to resolve the problem. Yep that worked great! Of course he came down about 10 minutes before air.

was on my way to a town budget meeting the other day, when I discovered that the road I was taking was blocked off by flares, fire dept, police and EMS. Turns out that a person on a bike was trying to cross the dark highway onramp and was struck by a tahoe. I caught EMS rescusitating the man twice, caught the driver of the vehicle shaking like a leaf and finaly caught the ambulance pulling away before the desk called, telling me to go the the ax. I told them I was on my way.

Came in at 5pm shot a pkg on road crews salting the roads at 7pm live shot for 10. Caught 4 hours of sleep in a hotel then up at 4:30 to do liveshots for the am show. Mast was frozen and the last section of the mast was frozen in the up position. Had to drive 30 minutes with the alarm in the live truck going off to get on an overpass really close to the station so we could get a shot. Did two live shots for the am show, thought I lost a couple of fingers in the 10 degrees and now I'm looking at another pkg and a liveshot for midday.

Stood outside ... late night/early morning ... with the crime scene tripod lean. Shooting near the downtown area. One dead, another wounded.

Had to wait on the badge to come give info.

have my first shoot with an independent production company. There's five shoots lined up over the next 10 months, but also we get to make some movie trailers this spring and I get to write one. I can't wait!

...spent a "thrilling" three hours covering a school board meeting.

Yessir, those certification/decertification topics are really, really visual.

--------------

Later in the evening, I shot two equally thrilling girls hoops games

yessiree, those 34-27 games that feature lots of turnovers...set-shots heaved from waist-level...two-handed bounce passes...sure are riveting.

Oh yeah, I forgot to mention...the last 3:00 took 15 "real-time" minutes to finish. Yup...foul-a-thon and free-throw fest.

So, yes, it was a very thrilling day.

was sent to babysit a standoff that was in it's third hour at a hotel...

roll up to the scene, start getting b-roll, then two flashbangs go off in the hotel and the nutjob comes out the window! He was five stories up, so a fall would either kill him or SERIOUSLY injure him.

the TAC officers grab him as he's about to jump and bring him back inside.

video link here...

standoff

should be near the top of the news category. if not, search for "standoff", should pop up.

Watched a building get imploded and ended up covered in about an inch of Las Vegas history!

Pics and stuff will be on my blog later, but you can check out the story here.

The opening shot of the implosion is mine. We had 3 cameras out there, and I was set up with a couple of other stations and some various media outlets across the street in a Lowe's parking lot.

Apparently we were within the 'death zone' but they didn't tell us till 15 minutes before hand , so rather than make us move, they just had us abandon our cameras for the implosion.

The strangest part was that the dust headed our way, then made a right turn, then came back at us.

All in all, probably the coolest thing I will see this year!

Attended the aforementioned casino imploding.....and it was pretty cool. However with another two scheduled for later this year, i think i will see a much bigger one later in '06.

Didn't know ewink was "in the death zone" cuz i was on property, but i am sure he's alright.

Actually yesterday...Out on a hostage-standoff.

The hostage taker killed his ex-wife's boyfriend in the driveway of the home, took his ex-wife and her 2 year old son hostage. Stand-off lasted 4 hours. Hostage taker ends up letting the boy go, kills the ex-wife and tries to kill himself before the cops throw in some flash bombs and make entry into the house.

Shooter probably won't live, but is still alive today.

Darn shame that the kid will not have a mom or dad when all is said and done.

Tried to get a mug of the shooter, but he has never been arrested. Good guy just went "postal".

Was bored so I went to a reported male about 200 feet up a power/transformer tower...Despondent about something or the other...1 USAR team, 2 big air cushions underneath, 3 police agencies, 2 power companies, etc etc...on scene - Turned out to be a 16 year old with no fear of heights...mad at someone in the family. It got dark and the kid was kind of stuck and wanted to come down - so they sent for one of those "light trucks" from the FD - It came and fired up, and down came the young lad - climbing down the outside of the tower- to hugs from negotiators and family... This lasted about 3 hours...

The kicker was at about the 40 minute point, law enforcement wanted to communicate with the kid and offered a cell phone... The kid came ALL THE WAY DOWN the tower to about 6 feet off the ground...took the phone, and then scurried back up to the TOP again! I would've thought they'd have pulled him down instead of giving him the phone!

Shot and edited a photo piece on the USA Luge team visiting a local ski slope. It turned out pretty well, so I was happy.
