PMW-300 firmware

For those of you who have not seen it looks like the PMW-300 and 400 firmware upgrade for xavc is out at least in Australia.

Now I am unfortunate enough to be here in the states where there is no update to the sony website. Can anybody answer for my own edification is the same software we will see here in the states in what is presumably another 2 months? Would it even be safe to install on a camera or would said camera be turned into an expensive brick in the process? either way I will probably wait until the official US release but it is something I would like to know for future reference.

You should be fine. All regions get the same firmware, but Sony USA always does their own QC testing before distributing the file after they get it from Japan. Other countries don't have the resources to do that, and so they just post what they get right away. Unless there is some really important new feature that I absolutely need to have immediately, I prefer to wait until it passes QC from the USA guys. I know of instances in the past when firmware and utility software did not pass. Today's cameras are essentially computers with lenses, and there's a lot of opportunity for mistakes to be made.

I'm with Doug, I usually wait at least several weeks after new firmware/software comes out before updating it in ANYTHING(phone, camera, computer, etc.). Heck, I'm still running the last version of iOS6 on my phone and Mountain Lion on my laptop because I don't like the new versions.
