Hi all;

I'm trying to find a decent wide angle adapter lens for my HPX-370. The lens I'm looking to fit is the Canon HDGC (KJ21x7.6B-IRSDPS HDgc 21x 2/3") Does anyone out there know of a decent adapter??

GREATLY APPRECIATED!

I'm in the process of buying one of these for my own camera but this is the one that is threaded for 82mm

This is their zoom-thru model and you can buy a lens hood to fit it.

That said...I too own a Red Eye wide-angle adapter, which happens to be threaded for 82mm lens. It's been with me for a long time and in pristine condition. Bests of all, it's light as a feather and less expensive than any zoom-thru. I can't say enough good things about it except...I wish I could zoom through it! That's why I'm getting this other one.

It all depends on your budget but I have several freelance friends who put that above listed zoom thru lens on their cameras and they love it.

Be sure and shop around for a good price. You can find it for less money from places like B&H but you have to wait a week or so longer to get it. But that can justify the savings! ;)

I've had the same 16x9 wide converter (0.8x, 82mm) that Lensmith mentions above for about 6 months. I've found it unusable. I get vignetting on the wide side of the lens and the entire image blurs on the tele side of my 17x lens. Not sure if there's a compatibility issue with my lens (Fujinon 17x6.6) because I have heard several other people who have this converter and love it. Just a word of caution... maybe look for an opportunity to test it with your lens before buying if you end up going in that direction.

I have the lens hood, too... the assembly with the screw that tightens the hood on the converter broke off. The hood still fits on and is usable but no longer tightens (until I set aside some time to rig it back together).

Just to be clear...my RED EYE adapter is a .7X, not .8X, but is threaded for 82mm.

This kind of adapter does not allow you to zoom through it. Only wide. That's why they are so much less expensive than other pricier models which do allow you to zoom through them.

Mine was great for quick wide shots in cars or other tight locations where zooming was not really needed. If I needed to zoom, I did it with my feet (or back, as the case may be). ;)

I used it on my SONY PMW EX3 shooting full HD and didn't have any of the issues you mention.

For what it's worth...I put my 82mm Collinscraft RED EYE up for sale on eBay today.

Here's the company web site which clearly describes what the adapter can and can not do.

Forgive me Corey if your comments above are about the 16X9 Inc. adapter and not about the Collinscraft RED EYE adapter.

However...I used my 16X9 Inc. zoom-through all last week on several shoots and, again, never had the issues you mention.

It is a .8X but threaded for 77mm.

The link I posted above is for the 82mm threaded version because the original poster had a lens needing that size threading.

Maybe you got a dud?

Not trying to pick a fight. Just trying to be clear about what I have and like without coming across like a jerk! :)

Cost

First, this is a great thread--the Red-Eye looks perfect for my needs. I've been looking around and it appears to be slightly more expensive than the EXII. I am looking at the 82mm.

here is the B&H price for the EXII $459.95:

compared to the Red-Eye $520 (82mm adds $100 to the orig $420):

Have you seen the Red-Eye for a better price?

It's entirely possible that I have a dud or that my lens doesn't line up correctly with the 16x9 attachment correctly for whatever reason. I was referring to the 16x9 .8x zoom-through converter since I have the same model that you linked, not necessarily the specific model that you own. Just wanted to throw my experience with that piece out there. Of course, there have been plenty of people who have had great experiences with the EXII... but I think it's worth noting that this problem does exist for me, whether it's a lens compatibility issue or otherwise. That's why I suggested a test with your lens before purchase, to exclude this possibility.

Lensmith, it's good to hear from someone who's had positive results with it! Reassures me that I likely have an isolated problem and not necessarily one resulting from poor manufacturing, etc.
