I just posted this in general, but you guys must have ideas...

Hi All,
I'm quite sure this topic has come up before, but until now I've never had a true interest. I'm looking to acquire a hand-held scanner and I wanted to pick the collective mind and get some opinions. Model numbers would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

depends on what you want to listen to.Do you know anything about trunking?I have an old Uniden BC235XLT, that holds plenty frequencies and can scan a trunked agency if I program it in. You might be able to find a used one cheap. I paid $300 for it like 6,7 years ago.
Top of the line BC245xlt with the APCO25 digital card in it can scan almost all of the latest trunked agencies.
Do some internet searches for scanner frequencies for public safety agencies in your area. You should be able to glean some info from there.
