October 8th, 2007: Registration for the NPPA’s 2008 NewsVideo Workshop, and its brand new component, two-days of Avid non-linear editing training, is set to open October 31st, 2007.

The National Press Photographers Association announced today that the 2008 NewsVideo Workshop will be held March 14th – 21st in Norman, OK. March 14th and 15th will consist of the workshop’s new training module, HANDS ON Non-Linear, HANDS ON Avid. The 16th – 21st will play host to the rest of the workshop’s programming.

Registration will open on October 31st, 2007 at www.nppa.org/newsvivdeo_workshop.

The 2008 workshop is designed for all visual journalists, of all experience levels, who shoot or want to learn how to shoot and edit video and audio. The NPPA encourages freelancers, newspaper staff, TV staff, web site staff and anyone else who wants to learn the art of moving pictures and sound , including those currently shooting stills, to attend the 2008 workshop.

This event will be a week long, intense immersion into the world of video storytelling. Attendees will spend 12 – 16 hours each day learning from a faculty of more than 20 nationally and internationally recognized, award winning journalists. Some of the topics that will be covered include story telling, lighting, audio, editing, live shots and new technology.

The NPPA also announced the first four confirmed speakers in its line-up. Bob Brandon, Bob Dotson, Darrell Barton and Ray Farkas FARKAS IS NOT CONFIRMED!!!! will be presenting the cutting edge in video and storytelling techniques. Between them, these four journalists have 21 Emmy Nominations, 8 Emmy Wins, 4 Photographer of the Year Awards and a Sprague Award.

New to the workshop this year: HANDS ON Non-linear, HANDS ON Avid. This two-day training will be open to all professionals attending the 2008 workshop. Space will be limited to the first 40 registrants to accommodate the hands on style of instruction that will be used. Registrations will be accepted on a first come, first served basis.

From the basics of Ingest, through the entire editing process, this new training will provide insight into the functionality and benefits of non-linear editing. 40 non-linear editing systems and an Avid Certified Instructor will be onsite for in-class instruction courtesy of Avid Technology. In addition to the non-linear mechanical editing basics, the Avid certified instructor will be on hand to teach special effects for video and audio, working in multiple video formats and exporting finished sequences directly to the web.

As usual, the fees for this session are outragous. There are times I think that the NPPA is just a money making organization. Thats why I no longer belong. Cripes when you consider that stations wont pay for these anymore, and then you add in the hotel and travel cost, you are talking 3 months salary. NPPA, you want to retain your members? You need to come down to reality and understand that the industry has changed to a new business model and come up with a more affordable solution.
