Compressing to 1 Gb

A client of mine recently made a request that has completely stumped me.

The deal is for me to make a series of 5 to 10 minute videos that will be uploaded to Youtube. The client wants each clip to be as close to 1 Gb as possible without going over. Their thinking is that if each clip is as close to the limit that Youtube will accept, they'll get the maximum quality possible after Youtube crushes it.

Thankfully, some of the shorter clips don't need any compression at all but the longer ones need varying amounts. Currently I am just using trial and error to determine the correct settings and it is extremely slow going.

I checked previous threads and found them immensely helpful for setting optimum compression settings but I was wondering if anyone knows any tricks for setting compression for a specific file size rather than quality.

PS. I'm using FCP and compressing to QT.
