The usual rule of thumb is to encode for DVD to the usual MPEG2 format at 8mbps VBR.
The recipe I get most success with (and it just happens to be that used by my main client) is;
Compression; Mpeg2 4:2:0
GOP IBBPBBPBBI
Resolution (SD) 720x520 interlaced, 16:9, upper field first. (oh, thats for PAL)
The audio for disc v client is different, as the client only accepts it at 48Khz, two channel, at 192Kbps/channel while the DVD standard is 44.1Khz.
The vision quality is pretty stunning on a 42 inch plasma, considering its SD, and there are naff all compression artifacts on moving objects.
