your favorite part of your job

Obviously we all work in video because we absolutely love it. Many of us do very different things though and many of us love very different things about what we do.
So lay it on us... what's your favorite part of your job?

I work in news....somtimes sports. I'm a general assignment photographer (if that title exists) as well as a sng/eng operator/technician.....My favorite part has to be not knowing what I will be doing tomorrow, or even in an hour for that matter, and not knowing who I will meet next....or where I will go next. There is nothing "normal" about this job.....but that is why I love it!

I will have to say, not knowing where i am going to next. Tho i will say i absolutely hate going for LOCATER video.

I like it as it brings me into more contact with the rest of the word than when I was an engineer.

It gets me exercise without having to consciously exercise (like at a gym or something)

The possibility of recording a historic event is always there too!

One of the main things? It allows me to test some of the equipment I am working with in a real environment.

Same as some above... The not knowing from minute to minute. I hate the death stories, where you memorialize someone, but then I think, this is my way of telling their story. I also like the stories with a challenge, when you do not have much video, how you going to do it, how can we make this work...

I also love the Breaking News. I like to work under pressure. I feel I work better when there is alot of stress.

I leave work on my Friday... looking forward to work on Sunday... I don't think many professions can say that.

Worst part is covering death or real bad illness of kids. Having small kids, changes my whole perspective. Makes me appreciate the little that I got.

Simple: The Access. Having a camera on your shoulder is liek having a backstage pass to life. In what other profession can you stroll unencumbered from palace to crack-house to palace again in the space of a single shift. Cool tools are just that, unpredicatability can be found elsewhere. For me, it's always been The Access - and the real world education it's provided.

Just like Lenslinger, It's the Access. It's also having a front row seat to history. Years later I can look back and say I was there when that happened. I saw it happen first hand. I've been to two Olympics, in the middle of huge forest fires, "floor" seats to several NBA playoffs. Historic NFL playoff games, Several air refueling missions, sitting in the middle of 1,000 pot plants after a 10 mile hike with DEA agents... I could go on. I also get to tell the stories of people and family members that have been died in tragic accidents. I ended my general news gathering 2 years ago to take on another photojournalist gig in a special projects unit. It's not near as much fun or full of adventure like a general news photog. I will be a general news photog. again some day.

I love it because its different day-to-day. I'm not stuck in a cramped office cubicle everyday and you never know where you're going or who you're going to meet. Of course there's also the creative aspect of shooting and editing. That's a large part of it.

General Assignment: I loved the unpredictability...meeting new people...feeling the adrenaline rush at breaking news scenes...getting access to places I never would have the chance of visiting...having fun in the sun telling worthwhile stories (sometimes).

Investigative Unit: I love my stability in this dept....testing my photog skills on challenging stories...being as creative as possible....telling worthwhile stories (pretty much all the time)...getting even more access to places I would never have the chance when doing GA...having the time and input on crafting stories...being sought advice from the younger guys who need guidance.

the problem-solving.
each day is a different challenge - each new room has things you need to deal with.
the light changes every second.
it keeps your brain moving.

Brian,

how about getting some facetime and a shout out on a GMA Valentines piece? thats kind of cool.

'PASSPORT TO ADVENTURE!"

Indeed! a 'PASSPORT TO ADVENTURE!"

Mainly, the fact that we get the chance to see and document history as it's happening! Plus all of the cool, fun stuff we get to experience and see! But for me, it's also the technology, I'm a little bit of a geek so I really enjoy the technology we work with be it cameras and editing equipment to satellites.

I love the creative side of it. Being paid for using my creativity is awesome. It's the first job I've had that I actually want to perform to the best of my ability. Finding just the right shots to help capture the moment. It's a lovely thing. I also like the unpredictablility others mentioned. Not knowing what each day will bring always keeping you on your toes at all times. I've witnessed a lot of things I would have never imagined seeing first hand before I got this job, and I've only been at it for half a year. Can't wait to see what the future holds.

I really enjoy meeting new and interesting clients, finding effective and entertaining ways to tell their story, and working with other creative, committed people who enjoy this business as much as I.

The constant opportunity to learn new things. The chance to ask people questions.without be labeled as nosy. Opportunities to experience things first hand that other people don't.

We're always meeting new people and going new places to learn new things. I love that every day is different. That we get a front row seat to all kinds of history (political, sports, science, etc). We get to see and experience all sorts of things that most other people don't. We get to learn a little about many things and meet all kinds of people from the top to the bottom of the heap. The technical and creative parts are fun too of course. :D
