Been awhile since I did any travel. What's the safest way to transport tape. Carry on or checked w/luggage?

Both. More accurately, in three places.

Put some in your luggage, some in your carry-on, and one in your camera. That way, no matter what happens, at least you still have some videotape to shoot with. BTW, the airport scanners shouldn't interfere with your tapes...at least, they've never bothered my tapes.

If you're talking about tape you've already shot, keep it with you in your carry-on. You don't want all the fruits of your labor to end up at Unclaimed Baggage in Scottsboro, Alabama, while you're making hand-drawn flip books to illustrate your trip.

I LOVE Unclaimed Baggege there in Alabama! When I was going to school and didn't want to pay Univ. bookstore prices on tapes, I would head to the one in BOAZ, AL and get them for 50 cents each. Of course there would be some intresting b-roll on them...the weirdest was a porno....didn't understand a word they said...but who cares!

1. Do not let them X-ray film, this could fog it.
2. Do not carry video tapes on your person, metal detectors could erase parts of your tape. :)

What's the difference between the metal detector you walk through, and the baggage one?

The thing you put your baggage through isn't a metal detector. It's an x-ray machine. It has a screen where the operator can see what's inside your bag.

The thing you walk through doesn't x-ray you. It just checks for metal and other elements in certain quantities. There's no screen to look into your underwear. It just beeps if you have a gun tucked in there.

Large amounts of cash will also set off metal detectors. Those strips sewn into the fabric of the bills will trip the thing if enough of them are stacked together. I don't know what the limit is, but just be aware of that if you're trying to move large amounts of ill-gotten cash. :D

Shaky as a photog how would you know that large amounts of cash set off the metal detector? I hope it's from a story otherwise I may be thinking you are doing something illegal. Or I want to know where the good pay is for photogs!!! ;)

Avoid sending shot tapes through the CTX machines that they use on checked baggage. They are much more powerful than the hand luggage xray machines and have been known to induce magnetic fields if not properly grounded. If you want to check tapes the TSA supervisor will hand inspect if you ask.
