Am getting word that things there amoung the photojournalist staff isn't good. Folks there are looking to bail? What has happen to the S.O.Y.?
More crime and grime and less storytelling?

yeah it's true and very sad. i know a lot of us are trying to keep positive with the all of this stuff going on. not sure where anyone will go though.

How could things not be good at KSTP? They were named station of the year by the NPPA! Even if those guys get bounced I'm sure stations around the country are lining up to hire each and every one of them! That's the value of an award like that! ;)

so what exactly is going on over there? i haven't heard anything other than the sister channel 45 dropping it's news and Conus (i believe is the name) getting shut down. are they laying off still more photogs?

the problem is new regime. new way of thinking, new way of covering news, and new everything. it's really sad whats going on. great guys too work with great talent all around.
in my mind what we do best here is on it's way out. no more soy - poy - or nppa for us at ks.

The real world of television news has arrived. Now we'll see just how many of those stuffed shirt NPPA members have what it takes to shoot under deadline.

No more dead air filled with nat packs! WA HOO!

Boo Hoo,

I fell sorry for you and your attitude. Guys who have pride in there product and craft are loosing there jobs and you want to celebrate their downfall.

And the NPPA does more than just contest. They are a voice to watch out for our rights as photojournalist
everywhere including you, unless YOU perfer the title camera monkey.

sincerly

Crash Edit

Sad to see it happen to another great photog station, sounds like what happened to KNSD, San Diego a couple a years ago. :(

Is it likely some of the KSTP guys could go across the street to KMSP??

Hey Crash Edit,

Are the photogs losing their jobs (being fired), or are they choosing to leave? There is a difference. If they are choosing to leave because they cant do the 5 minute nat paks anymore, and the regime is changing, then they are not losing their jobs. Now if the new management at KSTP is coming in and cleaning house, then that really sucks for everybody.

Wildman,

You are right, I am not sure if they are being laid off. However My main response was to boo hoo and his or her lack of respect for fellow photogs. We all now there is no right way to shoot and edit, but we should respect each others individual style. And not revel in the demise of others.

Wildman thank you for your comments and I agree with
you if they are just haveing to deal with a new way of thinking then it will be there own choice to leave or not.

Thank You

Who are you kidding? The NPPA NEVER takes a public stand to defend the rights of photojournalists. That's one of the main complaints about the NPPA. They don't ever take a public stand for photogs whose first amendment rights are violated. Unless you call that usually dated "News Views" column in News Photographer magazine a stand?

When was the last time the NPPA spoke out about photogs that have been beaten or abused by police outside of their magazine. When was the last time the NPPA wrote a letter of protest to any government official or governing body? Its sad, but they wont stick their neck out politically for any photog. The only thing the NPPA represents is c-o-n-t-e-s-t-s and a few shallow seminars aimed at how to win them. The NPPA has no active voice in our defense.

You're right Crash Edit, we shouldn't revel in the demise of others. I am sure we have all been through regime changes at least once. Its not usually a good thing.

Thanks,
Wildman

I don't make the big paycheck by being a camera monkey. I make it by not missing deadlines and covering news that isn't a little made up movie for a contest.

Let's see how many of those award winners quit because they can't handle the real world. Let's see how many can't do the REAL job of covering news. It's a little sad when kids have to grow up but some people think they can hide from reality. The boys and girls at KSTP are just the beginning of the reality check for Minniapolis. Watch the other stations fall in line soon too. This is the real world of business. The days of some joke club like the NPPA are long gone. The leaders know it. Now some of their finest award winning members are seeing reality first hand.

Denver won't be far behind! :D

Two words: Chris Berg
For those of you who don't know Chris he's a good guy and KNOWS how to cover news. Here's a few articles to get to know him.

http://www.bizjournals.com/albuquerque/stories/2003/03/03/daily20.html

http://www.kstp.com/article/view/85972/?tf=eventview.tpl

As you can see KSTP has had plenty of problems. A NPPA award winning staff has done nothing to solve these problems. Some think they may have caused MORE problems instead.

Chris is being put in a situation that needs fixing. The people in place now had better figure out they were part of the problem and, in their own best interests, had better become part of the solution.

Berg is going to make that place a better operation. It's up to each employee to decide if they want to be a part of it or not.

Good luck Chris! I'll work with you any day, anywhere!

Yo! Get off of their back. Every station goes through some kind of change. We all have had our share. Any station that has employees with great team work can overcome anything. I think KSTP will be just fine after the changes.

By the way what is the pay like at KSTP> I am thinking of moving there.

I understand the argument that the storytelling approach may not be in order up there much longer, but explain to me what covering the "real world of news" is.

For the record, I'm not at KSTP or even in that time zone. Run and gun is the norm nowadays. Live in all shows on your shift with one or two pkgs, yep. Lots of room for creativity? a lot of times, no. But how in the hell is that harder?

It's like any other routine. Pkgs are no longer than 1:15, pretty much track, bite, track, bite, track, bite - end. Shoot to edit.

No fancy edits, shoot it clean, set up the truck while the reporter writes, do the live, break down the truck and go home.

It can wear some people down, sure, but for most it becomes a routine.

Taking time and crafting something, taking time to make every shot and edit count, now that is hard work.

A creative approach everyday news or special projects is a helluva lot harder than whipping out glorified VOSOTs day in day out. Hell, talk about a "formula".

Hey man I also work in a run and gun shop and I do have to edit 1:15 PKGs. You want to know something else. I am still able to squeeze in a little NAT here and there. After doing that the PKG does not go over 1:15. Lots of track and lots on interview sound. It's called tight edits and team work with you and he reporter.
