I'm at a small market station with no chance of getting into an avid system anytime soon. I'm reading up on some of the job postings and I see that most want exp. with a Non-Linear system. How important is previous training a requirement?

Every job and every station is different.

If you are going to a shop which is completely NLE and you are going up against other people for the job who have the NLE experience, they have better standings.

Go to a community college and enroll in a class or two and get up to speed.

If you learn one NLE, you learned every other one... it's the same prinicples in every editor and you'll find the same basic tools and edits, they just have different names, different keystrokes, etc.

Get the experience and you'll be better off.

I agree with lil photog. When I look for folks with some NLE experience, I like to see at least one NLE piece on their reel, whether it be adobe premiere, final cut pro, avid, media 100, any name I recognize.
It shows me their computer literate, and have experience in the "non-linear" mentality. When they get here, they just have to learn which buttons to push to do the same thing.
