I think the problem is not that it's racist, or Nationalistic....it's lack of assimilation into society.
Yes, that is the part that feeds the Nationalism: You are not us. You are them.
Historically speaking, for non English speaking immigrants it is always their children who assimilate into the culture. The original immigrants came over, set up shop in ethnic neighborhoods and brought some of their cultural identities to the States. But it is their children, who were raised immersed in our culture that were truly assimilated.
But what has happened in the past doesn’t necessarily apply to the present. Most people came to this country to escape whatever hardship they faced. They saw this country as a great opportunity and worked their a$$es off so their kids would have a better tomorrow. Part of that still remains: there are plenty of immigrants who still follow this. However there is a growing percentage that doesn’t want to become part of this nation and merely utilize it to their economic benefit. I don’t think that you would find many among us on this board that would not support the first type of immigrant and would not oppose the second...
