I guess I'm a little confused.

The heat of this debate is being fanned by the sad state of our economy. I have to tell you, this recession hasn't bottomed out. Give it a year. Maybe. Until then, everyone on this post has a large bullseye painted on his forehead.

Management has two choices: Cut or get measured for their own bullseye. The easiest thing to cut is the people at the bottom. People with minimal skills. People who can easily be replaced. VJs make sense, from management's perspective. Tell the shareholders: “Look! I'm paying one guy to do two jobs.” They'll love it, they'll love him. Cheap to train and easy to fire. If Michael Rosenblum hadn't have thought of it, someone else would.

The public doesn't care about photography good or bad. I never heard someone say: “Oh golly Marge, look at that pan! It' was so smooth I though the videographer was levitating.” Most of what we shoot is head shots and city council anyway. That's why management hires a high school kid. They figure in two or three years he'll quit and they'll get a new one. They never counted on anyone sticking around.

Put your seatbelt on pal-

That level of common sense is an unwanted, misunderstood, verbal flame thrower in this crowd. You're going to be treated like a lepor for understanding how things are going. They are so fearful of change that it fogs their ability to see a way to make it work for them. This crowd takes the "deny the changes, trash the direction it's going, maul the competition, hug the old ways," method of dealing with it. You can't offer any acceptable logic to this subject HERE till the kid fresh out of "biness skool," with his 600 page thesis stapled to his forehead starts doing live shots with his digital slr that also shoots 16x9 hd for 10 dollars an hour and people are watching it and calling it the news.

and you don't call that a successful venture ??? LOL

No wonder you people are afraid of folks like M.R. Hell NOW I'm pi$$ed I didn't get a piece of that! Left wing fruitballs have been selling snake oil to the poor for decades and that doesn't bother you, but a film school sells a program to people who WANT IT, and you're all up in arms ???

The blind leading the blind. This is too funny to believe!

Knowing what you know now about the MR's school, would you hire a MR-taught VJ for your own project?

Extenze.

Thankyou for that look into your morals. Based on that I bet you are really sorry you missed out on selling poisoned baby formula to the Chinese, 60,000 sick kids and 4 dead but I bet they made a profit… if that’s your definition of success you can keep it.

Are you the guy who bought Extenze because the commercial said it would increase your manhood ?

It's not just the photography, stories shot by VJs suck. This is what drive the public to switch channel taking advertising dollars with them, not just the photography, crap comes as a package. Someone who doesn't understand how the elements of imaging fit together doesn't understand how to put a story together either, you can't have one without the other.

This is no just me saying this. With all the fanfare that Rosenblum has been doing over the years about VJ taking over the broadcasting industry, show me any national program produced by VJs and VJ style. Every piece of work ever made by VJs turned into disasters starting with the man himself. The "5Takes" series that Rosenblum produced was a disaster and painful to watch, that's gone. Look at the latest VJ venture on the Newark Star Ledger, just awful, it makes Youtube look good. Started with fireworks and in less than two month ended up in a minute corner of their web site as they try to hide their embarrassments, that was supposed to rescue their business, some rescue. Look at MR own operation in Washington, the videos of his VJ that he so proudly displayed on his blog and on youtube as MR version of outstanding VJ work was removed by him because of embarrassment, go ahead and see for yourself.
http://rosenblumtv.wordpress.com/2007/10/10/more-from-verizon-hyperlocal/

Do you realize that most freelancers in this country make over 200K per year and I know many that make over 300K? Do you know that most freelancer have no clue of what a VJ is or does and never heard of Rosenblum? These are not supermen, most were news photographers who realized that knowledge equal high earnings and instead of saying to themselves that the public doesn't know so why go thru the extra effort, they made every effort to diversify and improve their skills and and now they are enjoying a very good living. I was talking with a local photographer today, (who lurks on B-roll) he bought a HD camera a little over a month ago, not a toy, a full size camera with lens, probably a 40K plus investment and he paid off the camera in a little over a month.

Now, if you are fully satisfy with the money you make and you think that you'll make a comfortable living by supporting low quality, stay right where you are, you have achieved you goal in life.

Let's make this interesting...
Everyone here got a $600 rebate check, just like I did.

Perhaps a wager might be in order.

This is not a joke.

Who wants to set the terms?
Mike? Go Daddy? Chicago Dog? Nino?

Any takers?

Seriously- Let's stop the mudslinging and put some real skin in this game. Set the bet and I'll throw my cash in there.

This is real. Put up or shut up.

My only condition is that the results have to be able to be measured and verifiable by an objective 3rd party. In other words, ratings points or dollar signs.

Its obvious you are just trying to get people worked up by saying stupid things so you can feel important in some idiotic way... but seriously.... you rock Go Daddy! you are number 1!.

I think you should get a large banner and write down everything you believe in, and then you can march around in your own private parade.

Because when I think of right wing nut jobs... I think of someone like you, so march on poster boy of stupidity, march on. You are only helping the good cause, every time you open your mouth.

And now you are fighting for MR(Janet) and McCain, good for you.

For a short while you gave me the impression that you knew what you were talking, then came this.
The days when it was common to spend $3 grand a day for stories to put on a newscast that is being shunned by the public in increasing numbers, is for the most part dead.

$3 grand is what you consider high? I never even heard of a 3K day. I think we are talking about two different things here. You are talking about Triple-A clubs and we are talking major leagues.

With mileage and expenses that's almost what a crew with HD gears gets everyday, plus add the cost of a producer, talent and their travel costs and the lowest that a day shoot costs today is at least $6K, and that's a minimum. And you know what? Even at these rates good networks are having a hell of a time finding enough skilled crews to fill their needs.Try talking to these people about VJ quality and they laugh you right out of the door and these are network who are turning high profits year after year, it's all done with quality.

All Aboarrrrrrrrrrd.

Nino, this bandwagon is full at the moment please take a number and wait quietly. No one put 3 grand in any category except you. I've booked many 3 grand days and tooting a horn over the days that were twice that much or crying over days for half that much isn't part of this "debate." If you want to inject income comparisons here, that will only cause this already hate filled crowd to go into anger turrets. I do quite well thank you and that alone fills the hearts of most of these people with smoldering popcorn farts.

I don't see even M.R. promoting himself to the extent these whiners are doing. You can't buy this amount of publicity and the sheer numbers of those scared to death of him "biting their bottom lines," is testament to his apparent success. I had never heard of this M.R. till I came here. But it's clear that you are included in the rest of these people who believe everything in television has to be produced with multi grand crews and "quality." M.R.'s existence and ability to spook so many is proof that just isn't the case. Have you seen any local TV lately ? Did you see 60 minutes Sunday ? Quality ??? That was probably one of those cheap $3 grand crews. LOL

Feel free to take a spot on the wagon over near the back but don't feel ignored if it takes me a while to get to your quips.

You have to be kidding! Perhaps you need to watch the news you might well be producing. The "news business," as we have all known it is in it's terminal stage, or already dead. Is this news to you ? Apparently it isn't because you ended your rant, then your insults, with you understand that television news is being "killed," with this and that. I have never said quality doesn't matter. I will repeat that when corporate bottom line gets weighed against the current expense of what you describe as quality, the M.R. types are going to get the business.

---------------------------------------------------------------

No one is going to convince you like some wet behind the ears bright eyed kid getting the work you used to do at one third your salary and loving every minute of it when you don't get the call. It's going to happen and probably already is. Adapt or die is a perfect way to put it. The future will not affect me like it will you because I will adapt when that time comes while you continue to stamp your feet and point at your wall decoration.

You're ignored, troll.
Adios.

Take all the time you need man, burn the thesaurus so you can come up with pages of new cute phrases to make yourself feel important, won’t change a thing, the damage is done, you told everybody what you are. Those numbers of yours speak loud, you are nothing more that a minor leaguer trying to justify to yourself of why you never made it to the major. You can't talk big with small numbers.

I should be grateful, the more people that you can convince to pursue an unskilled minor league career like yours the better the playfield for the rest of us.

Your mom wears army boots.

Nino please. Watching you get caught up in this schoolyard bantor is just embarrassing. My budgets bigger than your budget, na na na nino. Please... I never felt bad exposing the nutcases that seem to be crawling out of the woodwork wanting to meet me after recess and beat me up till you got caught up in it too. You are embarrassing yourself and now for the first time here, I really feel bad about it. There are people who look up to you and think this is beneath you. Please try to find a way to keep from showing them it isn't.

For the record.

For the first time since I've seen M.R.'s name used here, I went to the url that contains his blog, and video clips and took a peak at what all the fuss is about. While I won't sit here and slam his business, I can tell you the work on his site is NOT the work I am referring to when I say some snot nosed kid out of college is likely to be doing the work some of you do in the future for a third of the money. I have never seen a "VJ," to my knowledge and I would be surprised if anything of that nature really makes it on television but on the other hand, how in the world could that type of work stir up such controversy and fear from any of you here ? If he is making money doing what he is, more power to him. But to think anyone in this business for more than 6 months feels threatened by that kind of work says a whole lot more about you, than him.

I don't mean to diss the work, but we are talking apples and oranges here. How could any of you feel threatened by that stuff OR him enough to yap about him for months and even YEARS probably!

You just don't get it, do you? You get into arguments without even knowing what's all about it, you just love to be controversial no matter what the argument is.

It's not about money, and definitely is not about fear, the fear factor was a slogan created by MR to make himself and his project look important, little guys love to feel that others are afraid of them, makes them feel big. If you didn't notice he is the one on the run, he is finished. And definitely is not about Rosenblum, is about maintaining a high standard of quality in our industry, is about telling losers like you that good enough is not good enough and the only thing standing in the way of making a decent living is what's in your brain. All this VJ controversy are effecting a minute percentage of video professionals, most people in this business make a good living and they have no clue of what a VJ is or does or who Rosenblum is. VJs in the real world where people are getting good wages are non existing.

The Rosenblums in this industry have existed since television started, the only reason that we hear so much about him today is because of the web. Take the web away and you wouldn't know who he was. Like his predecessors he will fade away too.

Times are surely changing and they have been changing since television started. Some people see it at destructive and others as new opportunities, to make more money not less. Lowering the standard of quality means lowering the standard of living.

There's more money being thrown into television productions today than ever before. At our end the increased and often exclusive use of HD technology has created an overnight one third jump in our revenue, we work the same but make one third more, what a concept. Also this year history is being made, this is the first time ever where advertising dollars spent on television surpassed those spent on print advertising and even with the bad economy television advertising dollars is up, of course this is due to the Olympic and election year but couldn't come at a better time as the economy is down and regular advertisers are temporarily cutting back. Of course you never hear Rosenblum pointing out these facts, good news in the industry means bad news for him. If you compare the television and cable industry to any other industry you'll see that it has been less negatively affected by the downturn of the economy than any other industry. When the public can not afford to go on vacation or out to diner they stay home and watch TV.

I tell you, is a different ball game outside the minor, too bad you never got what it takes to get there, but keep on writing and promoting poor quality, that will get you far, there have been dozen like you on these boards with the same ideas and they all have disappeared.

We can continue this conversation when you come up with something intelligent instead of things like "pop corn farts", but just like your minor league career I doubt you are capable.

My daddy can beat up your daddy.

Nino I'm certain most are embarrased FOR you to lower yourself to the levels of schoolyard punky brewster. I for one am no longer surprised. Your only claim to fame here for the last few posts is to try to compare dayrates and promote yourself as the messia of 3 point lighting. No one has ever promoted mediocracy least of all me. But you keep mentioning it as if you say it enough it will become true. You've become who you detest, and you are now promoting the same rehtoric. Stop writing novels to me as if they shed some light on your perspective rather than trying to show how much better you are than some M.R. type because now anyone reading your dribble can see the only thing that seperates you from he in theory and in practice is how you see yourself. He too believes he is the worlds gift to something larger than himself and since dayrate means so much to you he likely outshines your efforts in that area too. It's a little sad to see you get to this level but if it wasn't in you it couldn't be read. The best thing you can do now is to back away from this and hope the regulars are on vacation and won't read it.

Nino has provided insight on many matters and gave tips that have helped many here on this board. I always enjoy what he has to say, whether it is about lighting or a monopod adjustment.

What have you provided GoDaddy? Just a bunch of ramblings and political crap that spews from your infant mind thru the keyboard.

One you have something to add that offers substance, maybe then I will take your opinions with more then a grain of salt.

I don't know Nino. I've never met him, and I probably never will. But it is obvious that he is very knowledgable and he is defending quality, not necessarily bashing MR. MR is a salesman, plain and simple. His solution is to outfit kids with handycams and show them how to press record. If that kind of teaching doens't make you the slightest upset, then perhaps we should hand you an etch-a-sketch and send you out with the preschoolers to do your stories. Then you won't have to worry about white-balancing either.
