I have been told that we in TV news can use certain copyrighted materials under "fair use" laws. Is that true? If so, what types of materials can we use in news stories? When do we have to credit the source?

I've never had it completely explained as to what is OK and what is off limits. I think this is a sensitive (and potentially costly) issue we as photographers and editors face. I'd like to know the facts.

fair use laws where battled out when the movie panama deception was getting ready for release. they where editing national news to show the lack of coveredge of the war down there. it is some very loose language. the idea is that you can show analasis of other programming without there consent, as to rquire consent would be impossible due to critisizing the author. aswell public domain has alot to do with it aswell. I've been told that if the footage is marked through fair use it gives a layer of protection.
