B & H . . .. is this true ?

I've never been to the warehouse, but it's believeable enough. Religion aside, the place has a very weird vibe.

Can't say if it's true or not, but it's worth noting that it's an Al Jazeera story about a prominent Orthodox Jewish owned business.

I'm not really a fan of unions but if the allegations in the NY Times article are true, then I don't blame the workers for wanting to unionize. IF this is true then shame on B&H for treating their workers this way.

It's a free country. Anyone is entitled to quit their job and find a better one if they aren't happy with their employer.

So you're ok with a company saying employees can't take bathroom breaks or drink (water) during their shift?

There are certain laws companies need to follow when it comes to employee safety. IF the company is following all applicable laws, then yes, employees are free to find somewhere else to work. However, if a company is breaking laws, they should be held accountable.

As libertarian I don't recognize that the government has any standing to dictate how a business is run or how they treat or pay their employees. If you want a bathroom break, and the employer won't allow it, get another job. It's as simple as that. Don't be a cry baby and expect the government to step in and do something about it just because you don't like it. Get another job that suits your needs and expectations. And if the business can't find enough people to work under the conditions and the pay they are offering, then they will have to change in order to stay competitive or go out of business.

On the other hand, if you're a customer and don't like the way the company is being run, take your business someplace else. Anyone who is outraged by the way B&H (allegedly) treats their employees and yet still does business with B&H is a complete hypocrite. You should put pressure on companies to make changes by not working for them or doing business with them -- not by getting the government to be your mommy.

There are many companies that I choose not to do business with for various reasons, but I respect their right to run their business as they see fit.

Why don't we let the free market determine what working conditions should be, what people should be paid, how much products should cost, and which businesses ultimately live or die? Or we can just keep going down the road to socialism and cradle to grave day-care for all.

Sinclair Lewis just rolled over in his grave and threw up a bit in his seriously decomposed mouth.

But yeah, I'm sure someone in Kentucky coal country would love to have all the 10 year olds from your household and on your block back at the mines for some productive work. At pennies a day...

That is a totally different subject and you should know it. It's 2015 so let's not use arguments from 100 years ago. Nobody is suggesting that minors should be used for labor. Grow up.

You mean, other than this guy? "...Why don't we let the free market determine what working conditions should be?"

Meanwhile...

Baby steps, but you know what they say about the camel's nose inside the tent...

Legislation in Wisconsin and Maine recently rolled back decades-long restrictions on child labor, albeit for things like grocery stores, not coal mines, so it can be a moving target.

But if you think no business today would reinstate child workers (or any other kind) at sub minimum wage if the labor laws were changed to allow it, you're just whistling Dixie.

It took me just 5 seconds to say I am done with the conversation and will not make any further arguments that will risk extending the conversation. Is that so difficult for you to understand? Really? Do you hang up the phone without saying good bye so the other party knows you are done talking?

This is not worth my time to argue about. You can have the final word.
