    MY NAB 2014 impressions

My personal impressions only... NAB this year was more fun because I wasn't looking for anything in particular and was fortunate to walk away without spending a small fortune. It's always good to see the trends and this year 4K cameras were everywhere, along with brushless gimbals in copter and...

    Great mod for HDX900

Just had this excellent mod done by Macie Video on my HDX900 which makes using a Pix240 or Nanoflash even simpler. No need to have tape in the camera to make the digital device start rolling. Light on in the viewfinder lets you know the data is recording. Can start and stop the device from...

    P2 problem-exclamation mark on clips - using FS100

The first clip recorded fine. I pressed stop. Then pressed record again for next clips. All following clips will not open or play but the thumbnails have an exclamation mark on them. The files are there... 40+ gigs. Any clues?

    slow shutter on HDX900

Just curious, on the job I'm doing tomorrow, they are requesting a slow shutter effect, where you create trails. On the HDX the synchro scan will only allow me to go down to 30. I see no way to get an even slower shutter. Normally to get the effect I need to go to around 15 or less. Do you have...

Peter Lisand Corp out of business?

Was looking to update an old peter Lisand adjust-a-grip that I had on my D600 for use on a HDX900. Tried looking up Lisand and got nothing. Bummer. They made great stuff.

    Trailer for "Exhumed"

OK... so I don't really work news anymore. Still do a lot of doco, TV shows, industrial/corporate, some commercials and the occasional indie film. Here's the trailer for the latest indie film I worked on (before you ask... yes I got paid even though it was an indie film). This was a fun one as...

The moving picture camera market gets muddy again!

Snowy day in Boston and tired of shoveling, so I thought I’d express my thoughts on some of the new large chip cameras hitting the market. NAB is fast approaching and I’m sure we’re going to see a lot more advancements. My thoughts are directed not so much at the technical aspects of the...

A little self promotion... watch my film.

These are some difficult times in the freelance world. For the past five years or so I have been actively diversifying my client base, and at the same time trying to build a reel with narrative work on it as well as having documentary/newsmag/corporate etc. In doing that I've been involved in...

    shipping help

I have some heavy tripods (studio pedestal) that need to be shipped (and packed) from LA to Boston. Anyone have a line on a good shipping company...not too expensive that can pick up, box it and ship to me? Thanks for you help in advance. Cheers.

    Easy Rig

I've been working on a Discovery show that uses old F900's (the heavy ones!) and requires operating hand held all day, tough on anybody but for me especially difficult as I had rotator cuff surgery this past December. My friend and one of the most generous guys around, Tom Fahey, has allowed...

Rate my 72 hour 5 min 4k challenge film (Red camera)

This was posted in the freelance section 2 days ago...that's where I usually hang. I forgot about this part of the forum. Not everyone goes in Freelance! I have a Red camera. Not the perfect camera for ENG. But it does apply to EFP and many other genres. I've been using it on various projects...

View my 5 minute 4K film

Hey Fellas (and Gals), Many of you know that I bought a Red camera. Not the perfect camera for ENG. But it does apply to EFP and many other genres. I've been using it on various projects over the year, some broadcast, some not so much. But I've also been having fun doing narrative work with it...

    Diversifying

Got hired to DP a music video for a contest being held by Coldplay for their song Lost?. I used my Red One camera recording in 2K (the director wanted to do a lot of slo-mo 120FPS, can only do that in 2K). We shot it all last weekend in the Boston area...mostly outside with temps in the 20's...
