GoPro HD Hero at NAB
There are thousand’s of new innovations in the Las Vegas Convention Center for this year’s NAB. 90% were either connected to a DSLR or were in 3D. The noise from the debate over formats and chip sizes drowns out most talk on the floor.
I’m a user not an engineer, so I don’t jump into those conversations. Mainly. because my head can’t wrap around CCD vs. CMOS or 4:2:2 vs. 4:4:4 compression, I turn to the “cool gadgets.” Products that just seem fun.
One of my favorite examples is the GoPro HD Hero camera. The Hero is a tiny 1080p camera with a fixed wide angle lenses and an quick and easy waterproof housing. Simply charge the battery, push a button, mount the camera on anything and your shooting beautiful images in the most rigorous conditions. Take a look at some of their video samples.
What’s amazing about this camera is even outfitted with various mounts, the kits are only around $300. That’s cheaper than most waterproof housings for the camera you already own. What a great camera to have in your bag for a foul weather story – or even a fishing package.
This is a bare bones simple camera. No viewfinder. No audio inputs. No focus or zoom controls. But it does the job its made for… and yes, like everyone else, they’re making one that does 3D.
