Artist Says NO to Compact Cameras

September 30, 2008 kicker

While the eternal debate over the quality of smaller prosumer cameras continues, one man has decided to buck the trend.

John Chiara is a still photographer who has built a camera that is the size of a van. This 7 minute video is an interesting look at his process – as large as it is.

I think this trumps the old 2″ video tape cameras of old…

John Chiara (b. 1971) received a B.F.A. in Photography from University of Utah in 1994, an M.F.A. in Photography from California College of the Arts in 2004, and was recently an artist in residence at Crown Point Press (2006).

Very funny! This guy is hard-core! But actually, I was really touched. What is it to ‘go backwards’, and what is ‘is’ progression?

Absolutely inspiring. I was awestruck just looking at the pictures of his pictures. I imagine they’d look incredible firsthand. I would love to own one of those huge prints.
