Default SXS slow down load

Shooting with Sony PMW500 UDF 1080/25p 50 mbps

Down loading with approx 2yr old MBP (pre thunderbolt) to Lacie rugged 1TB ext HDD via firewire 800

Sony SBAC US10 single card reader USB2

Shotputpro set to fast data check only option

Full card taking 3 hrs plus !!! cant be right can it..

Down load is successful no problems.. but this time factor !! down load to desktop same time.. must be the reader.. but on one can be putting up with these times..

Any idea,s.. so far Ive just been told that something is wrong.. but no answers

No, it is not normal. Thousands of people ingest footage from SxS cards everyday around the world with no issues at all. I use the Sony reader and it is 3-4 times faster than real time with footage from any of the XDCAM cameras.

First I would make sure you have all the latest drivers installed.

Second, I would suggest taking Shot Put Pro out of they equation and just do a straight transfer via the Mac's Finder or use XDCAM Browser (recommended anyway). How does that speed compare?

Third, try a different hard drive or go straight to the internal HDD of the computer just for troubleshooting purposes.

Whatever problem you're having is unique to your setup so there is a solution someplace to be found.

You didnt get a usb 1 default by chance? That would explain the slow time.

Thanks Doug

I,am just getting pretty pissed off with the down loading now and that there seems to be no reason for the slow ness.. I have used shotput pro for a while and would like to keep using it.
As far as I know now drives or software needed for this reader,or ext HDD.. ? is that not right

Thanks

Just saying your speed ain't normal :-) Even on my 8 year old PC I can transfer straight from the camera about a gig per minute and that feels slow.

Robin, can you download from the camera instead of the card reader? If the time is the same it isn't the reader slowing things down.

Hi Camera god

Yes no problem.. I wasnt dissing you there.. sorry if a misunderstanding..
I tries XDCAM browser to copy to ext HDD and the same.. take a life time..
Dont see how it can be shotput pro.. which works fine with say the Nanoflash 64 GB cards.. from drive to drive is quick no problems.. seems to be the card reader is the weak link ..?
Why no thunderbolt card readers 1 yr down the line!!!

Havnt had time to do that.. in theory the same as USB 2.. I thought a card reader would either work or not.. so I dont think its a defective reader.. I would need a another reader to check I guess.

Or just buy a 17inch MBP with the slot.. sounds good.. no cables.. power supply etc.. just throw it in.. (have to down load the driver) but no big deal..

Really annoying as i cant see what part of the system is the cause.. computer is fine.the HDD were new,all 3 the same timing.. and the card reader is the from Sony.. maybe UDF is not well supported? the reader is slow and UDF 422 files are big,so it takes for ever?

I dont know.. why cant things just work !! or Iam just cursed..

You're not cursed, you're just doing a terrible job of troubleshooting in order to isolate and rule out one possible cause at time. Good luck with your approach.

Well I think Ive ruled out shotputpro as XDCAM browser was the same.. Ive tried 4 drives.. 3 SXS cards and drive to drive was fast.. which leaves the computer itself and the card reader..

Computer is behaving normally.. so I guess the Sony single card USB2 reader is slow with UDF 422 1080 files.. dont know if its possible just the one I had was defective.. I presume card readers either work or dont.. rather than being "slow" for some reason ?

If I get the camera probably buy the 17inch MBP with the slot.. and /or a non Sony card reader

Where are the thunderbolt card readers !! doesnt look like its ever going to happen..

Robin, they are closer then you might think.

Sonnet Echo ExpressCard/34 Thunderbolt Adapter

Transfer from SxS cards is not working yet. Sony has to update and make their driver available that is Thunderbolt technology-aware.

Praise the Lord !! at last..what seemed so obvious is so slow in coming..

Sony I know your out there..!!! hurry up.. if you want my $$$$

The 800 is tempting, and Ive used it.. very nice camera and no down loads and all.. but bitten by the solid state bug now.. down loading time still the weak link I think..

Hoping thunderbolt will save the day..

Untill you read the bullet points on the right side:

SxS Memory Card Compatibility—The Sony® SxS Mac OS driver does not currently support the Echo ExpressCard/34 adapter. SxS cards may become compatible, when and if Sony makes available an updated driver that is Thunderbolt technology aware. Sonnet apologizes for your inconvenience if you purchased the Echo ExpressCard/34 Adapter to ingest SxS media.

Yes ISDV points that out,and I had also seen this product.. lets hope someone from Sony reads these forums..

For my own problem it seems the UDF format of the PMW500 (same as the Alexa) maybe the reason its much slower than the FAT32.. I see the Nexto has a separate model for UDF files.. looks like the 17inch MBP with express slot and UDF driver would be the best bet to date.. ??

Here's a very good review on the new Sonnet adapter which talks directly to the point of transfer speeds using SXS cards.
