back on topic talk about adding insult to injury with the camera. I would not want to be the one telling the story of why that one needs repaired when it goes in. Though if he has that thing coming in for the kill on tape that might be a different story.

I suspect there's a handler with a big leather glove just out of frame. They probably set that shot up to get good footage of the bird flying in right over the lens, and the bird landed on the wrong guy. Still a good shot, though. |

Oh crap -- you're right! I didn't even notice that strap. Good call.
The bird doesn't look like he's having any problems sinking his hooks in. Euch. |

Wow. I want to hear what the photog has to say too! He must have done something stupid- either on purpose or not. It makes no difference. Immature Bald Eagles aren't to be messed with! My girlfriend gives educational presentations with a Bald Eagle and a couple of other unreleasable birds for a local non-profit up here in Alaska. Sometimes, I'll bring my camera along and practice shooting video so I can one day cut together a nice little short highlighting the organization.
I've learned that even though these birds can be trained to step up on to a gloved hand and eat scraps of food on command, they're still wild at heart. They will not hesitate to defend themselves if they perceive a threat, and I've seen the damage they can do with those talons! That leash should have been securely held by the bird's handler if the photographer was allowed to get that close, and if he WAS allowed that close, it was stupid on the handler's part.

I suspect they were trying to get something like this (except maybe not in slow motion):
The handler was probably standing behind the camera. The idea would be for the bird to fly right over the top and land on the handler's glove, but instead it went for the wrong perch. |

I'm inclined to agree with you, Cameradog, but the thing that gets me is that he had his tripod extended near it's full height. If it were me, I think it would make more sense to be about 8-10 feet in front of the handler with the tripod and camera closer to the ground. That way, I can get the bird flying overhead without risking being at the same level as the handler's outstretched arm or perch.
Is there any other info about this photo- like where it was taken specifically?

Perhaps he was wearing a Marmot jacket.

I was recording sound in a raptor enclosure in a zoo in France once. The handler told me not to hold the boom mic up as the bird would try to land on it (being the highest thing around) I said I'd keep it low to the ground and shoot up. He said the bird might mistake it for a rabbit (because it was grey and fuzzy) and attack it.
I went wireless to the camera and waited outside the enclosure.

One of mine was attacked by by a young Barnum Bailey Circus lion. That's what I get for leaning on the cage to steady my shot! Duh!

Okay...I finally found the context, with a different angle on the attack.

Well how about that! I really like these shots. That makes a bit more sense now. Also, I didn't realize they were half a world away in Kazakhstan.

Oh God. I'm glad my fiancée wasn't home when I opened up those pictures. Cute furry woodland creatures trump sporting and tradition in her mind.
