Avid Drops Out of NAB2008
November 13, 2007 Avid Technology will not exhibit at NAB2008, the company announced Tuesday. Until now, the editing solutions giant has had a major presence at NAB, with sponsorship of events including the popular post-production conference. The company said Digidesign, its audio division, also will not exhibit. Avid will still be in Vegas in April to meet with customers and will continue to sponsor the Broadcast Education Association conference within the show. It also plans to sponsor the PBS Technology Conference, which takes place prior to NAB. Instead, Avid is introducing a “major shift” in the way it serves its professional customers, and is promising a “blitz” new user-community initiatives, technical support programs, highly personalized events, and innovative product announcements in 2008. Avid will offer more details on the campaign in February. The new approach “will be designed to make it easier for customers, prospects and the media to interact with the company,” the company said. Nancy Hawthorne, Avid’s interim CEO, discussed Avid’s customer relations issues at an investors’ event Nov. 5. She said Avid needed to deepen relations with its enterprise customers and she conceded that some products had been rushed to market, resulting in some dissatisfaction among customers. “We are always evaluating the most effective ways to build closer relationships with our customers and keep pace with the ever-changing media market. Over the past few months, we’ve been collecting data from all of our constituents, and the findings have been clear – we need to connect with users in new ways,” said Graham Sharp, vice president and general manager of Avid’s Video division. Anyone interested in receiving updates on Avid’s new customer-focused initiatives in 2008 can register for e-mail alerts at www.avid.com/we-are-listening. |

They want to be more accessible to people, yet they're pulling out of a major show? That doesn't make any sense.

Where did that article come from? It reads like whoever wrote it just did a cut-and-paste from an Avid news release. It certainly doesn't raise or answer questions like the one Chicago Dog poses.

Different event.... but I think it was NBC or CBS that pulled out of NATPE, another huge similar Vegas show. Different reasons... but interesting as well.
The Avid pull out is interesting. We just converted to Avid servers/editors/newsroom system - so the line about ...."some products had been rushed to market, resulting in some dissatisfaction among customers" was of interest. Ours seems to be working fine... but with some expected and unexpected glitches. Most computer systems have hang ups now and then. So I expected them. Who knows what this is all about. Public relations will spin everything into a "positive" move meant to make customer service and their products "better." But there are a ton of people attending NAB, and Avid's competition like Apple and Adobe will get a lot more exposure there. Then again, they will pay the millions needed to go to NAB. Avid will be saving that expense. |

Not too bright reminding customers of their pain due to "products rushed to market". I guess Nancy is really planning on really being a "interim CEO". I might have used one of those products, except it was way after they were rushed to market :-)

On the plus side it does free up a lot of floor space. Oh, wait a minute. They're both pluses.

That's a big hole at NAB. They take up like 1/4 of the floor. They anchor the lower floor, and next big booth is Apple. I wonder what will take it place....Big hole to fill

Avid's booth was about 1/8th the size of Apple's at last years NAB. There was a HUGE buzz at Apple Land with the debut of Final Cut Pro 2 and the third parties supporting FCP2. Avid's booth were dead in comparison. When Avid failed to support us Mac users with new products a few years back we all jumped ship to FCP. Smart business move Avid...

I wish there was a professional/server based FCP that stations could use. Is there a full product line out there like that? I get tired with having to jump thru a thousand Avid hoops to do my job. There is no easy way to get video from the field laptops to the Avid server at the station, especially if you are stuck with the HVX-200.
