I just caught a little glimpse, as i was alerted by a fellow photog. KTVK and KNXV choppers have collided killing at least 2... The choppers were covering a police chase in phoenix. Keep a prayer for the families and friends of those involved...

Thank god they fell into the Steele Park there. there are many many surrounding areas that would have been worse...... hundreds of people could have been inpacted just a ery shot distance away.....

I've never ridden in an actual news helicopter before (only a Bell 47 with the doors off) and I don't know what kind of communication there is between helo pilots on an active news scene.
Can someone provide some info on whether something like this has happened before?
And of course, my prayers go out to the families and friends of those killed and injured.

My heart and prayers go out to the families in the loss of their loved ones that were involved in the News Chopper crashes of Channel 3 and Channel 15 in Phoenix, AZ.
I too have shot from news choppers in my career as a News Photographer at various stations around the country, and know how dangerous the job can be.
Let us all in the business pray for the families.

To Hilton Metzner, Bruce Haffner, Luis, Mike Conlee, Chris Morice, Schmitty, Scott, Frank, Patti, Steve, and my good friends and former co-workers at "Arizona's Family." My heart sank today. Michelle Weaver, John Mason and I are thinking of you guys.
My condolences also to those at KNXV. Rick Krolack will be missed. We worked with him also at KTVK. Been around that market for a long time. Lot's of energy. Lots of laughs. A good man.
Phoenix took a big hit today. To my friends there, God bless and take care.

KNXV-TV has confirmed Craig Smith and photographer Rick Krolak were aboard. 3TV has confirmed that Scott Bowerbank and photographer Jim Cox were on board.

as soon as I saw the footage, I knew that there would be at least two photog casualties if their pilots aren't the photogs. Now it's confirmed that the pilot and photog from each station were killed.
Our chief said it has been his experience that helo pilots communicate with one another to make sure they are traveling at different altitudes. Does anyone know more about the communication between the choppers? Was either chopper feeding vid back to their station live? If so, is there any inside-the-chopper video of the collision that could shed some light on what happened?
It is a sobering and humbling tragedy. My heart goes out to those who lost their loved ones/co-workers/friends in this terrible accident.

That's awful, prayers to all involved. But someone please tell me what the news value of covering a police pursuit live is?

My thoughts and prayers go out to the families. This is such a huge tragedy. We are always covering the news in our towns, but you never think your going to become the news, especally with something like this. RIP Craig, Rick, Scott, and Jim. You all will be missed.

I hate to say it but after, "Oh my god!", this was the first thought that popped into my mind.
Sobering moment if you've ever been up there covering "breaking news". Even more sobering when you've flown over that same desert sky.
