Looking for some advice on which camera to use for an upcoming project. In short, the project is a 5-7 minute promotional video. The project will use almost all original footage that I will need to shoot, which is the tricky part for me right now. I have both a 5D and an EX3 at my disposal, which is a good problem, but I can't decide which one to use?
I love the 5D in certain situations, but haven't been able to fully digest the 5D Kool Aid. For the last week I've been doing test shots in and around my office and when I bring the footage into my NLE I can't totally convince myself that this is the right camera for the job. Some of it is gorgeous and some of it, particularly anything with movement or real sharp edges is unwatchable. The infamous jello-effect is very prominent. Some call this a "filmic look," but I've never seen any films that looked this bad. My question is which camera would the experts on B-Roll.net recommend? I'm thinking of using both. Probably mostly the EX3, with the 5D in some low-light situations and maybe for some time-lapse. Thanks! |

You might be able to have certain segments with the same camera, but when you mix the video, it's going to be a pain to try and color correct. I'd guess the 5D would be be slower to shoot with...the EX3 would be more user friendly. Perhaps shoot the b-roll with the 3 and shoot some fancy interviews with the 5.

This project has no interviews. I was thinking of shooting the more static subjects with the 5D and stuff that moves with the EX3.
I feel like I'm trying to convince myself that the 5D is the way to go, which I shouldn't have to do. I've seen a ton of Phil Bloom and Vincent Laforet's stuff, which looks great, watched Act of Valor which was shot mostly with the 5D and looked fantastic, but I can't seem to get the stuff I shoot to look as good as I think it should. I've got the settings on the camera set to what everybody else says they should be with regard to shutter and ISO, and have even futzed w/the shutter some. Thanks for the quick reply. If anybody else has some words of advice/wisdom I would love to hear it. |

Having recently cut a project mixing the EX-3 and a 7D...go with the EX-3 as your primary camera.

Use both.
I mix cameras all the time. Depends on what the content is that you are shooting. ie. shooting in a server room for a computer company can be challenging, but on the 5D with interesting lenses it could look great. But then in the main office and outside the 5D could be a bad choice, and the EX3 an excellent choice. Just different tools. |
