Default KOMO TV chopper crash in Seattle, 2 people killed

http://www.komonews.com/news/local/N...250790281.html

Initial reports suggest the chopper just departed from the station's helipad in downtown Seattle, had some sort of tail rotor issue and started spinning before crashing into the street below. Chopper was KOMO's but also used by KING 5. Condolences to all involved.

As a staff member at KUSA-TV in Denver for their many helicopter crashes, this brings back a lot of bad memories. Prayers for the families of the staffers in the chopper.

Bill Strothman was the photog aboard Air4. Worked for KOMO for many years before leaving for Helicopters, Inc.

Say a prayer for his and the pilot's souls as well as for Strothman's son Dan who also is a KOMO photog.

Very sad indeed. I've been watching some of the coverage today on KIRO, KING and KOMO... they've all done an extremely good job covering the story under such difficult conditions with many reporters and anchors in tears.

Our chopper pilot says that helicopter model has a serious design flaw. The gas tank is plastic and located in the center of the fuselage so any crash or hard landing leads to a puncture of that tank causing the craft to burst into flames. We've had several EagleMed choppers crash around here over the past few years. They are the same model helicopter and each time they burst into flames on impact.

I've been a helicopter pilot (commercial/ certified flight instructor for over 20 years. I've not followed this accident closely, but rotor issues upon departure from a pinnacle are generally not survivable. This... all aviation accidents are horrible and costly. Helicopters are still the only mode of transportation in the world to have saved more lives than they have cost. They are also the safest mode of transportation in the world. TV stations count on them for what they can do, hover and land vertically. So, it sometimes impacts our industry up close and personal. This sounds like a terrible accident. I know how everyone loves to rush to judgment. For the benefit of all involved, colleagues, family, friends, I think it would be wise to wait for the NTSB report. Thoughts and prayers to all involved.
