In the "Sony down for the count" thread there was some discussion about what if Apple made broadcast cameras. Rather than hijack that thread I thought I’d give some of my thoughts on that
![]() Once you bought the iVideo camera ($9,999) the first thing you need to do is download the iFocus app ($9,999) and the iExpose app($9,999) There would be no viewfinder just a mount for your iPhone that shows you what you are shooting as long as you buy the iSee app ($9,999) If you wanted to mount it on your tripod there is a convenient Apple adapter available at an Apple store near you ($9,999) where you can also buy one Apple plug adapter ($9,999) that almost lets you connect to some other stuff made by Apple… sometimes. Hope your soundy has an iMix ($9,999) Any pictures you shoot would of course be uploaded to the iCloud where they become Apples property but you are allowed to download them from iTunes ($9.99 per min) for editing on iCut or FCP11. Once again anything made using Apple products would technically belong to Apple but you can trust them... can't you?

Wait, the iPhone isn't a broadcast camera? I might have to work hard to convince people of that around here...

So what you're saying is that you bought a GoPro camera, right?

And the battery would be built-in and and not user accessible...

In all seriousness, I'd just like my NX5U to have something like built-in WiFi or Bluetooth to send the AV signal wirelessly to my laptop for live streaming. It's the only feature I REALLY want to see in a camera without having to pay $30k.

Actually, I'd settle for a very small antenna (think handheld scanner with BNC antenna) with a small built-in Bluetooth or wifi transmitter that just plugs into the HD-SDI out.

The Teradek Cube does exactly that.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tiV1uV6Utgk There's also Lightiron Liveplay for your iPad depending on your workflow for $9.99.... http://www.lightiron.com/services/live-play

Canuckcam,
Yea, we use a Teradek with five 3G aircards for HD LIVE shots over wireless. It works really well but its kind of bulky with all those cards plugged in and if you're not careful its easy to break one off. As for as just using an encoder to stream to a laptop, the Teradek does do everything I want. Even though its small, its still ANOTHER thing you have to attach to the camera AND run a power source to it. Honestly, its not practical for smaller cameras. That's why I want to see this technology built into a camera OR something so small its the size of the antenna only and you just insert a small AAA battery for power and plug it into the HD-SDI port. I know I'm asking too much but that's what I'd like to see. What made me think of this was because of what I was doing Saturday. I was in Oklahoma chasing tornados. I have my SUV rigged with a switcher that's hard wired to my laptop and feeds a live stream over 3G. I have a fixed camera mounted on the roof that streams while I drive. When I pull over to shoot a tornado, I have a cable running from the switcher to the back of the car. I pull out the NX5U, attach the cable, punch the router, and now I'm streaming from my NX5U. I was able to stream a live shot of a big EF-3 tornado this way on Saturday. Its an OK setup but I'd love it if I was streaming straight from the NX5 to the laptop wirelessly through built in technology in the camera. The Teradek is fine but if its attached, the rain cover doesn't fit on the camera and the camera doesn't fit in the case. Unacceptable in severe weather. 2:37 is the shot where I was streaming live.

Nice! Sorry I was thinking more production and ENG with shoulder-cams... that way you can velcro the thing to back of a battery or side of the camera or into a wireless rx bracket. I'd be a little leery of anything that 'hangs' onto a port. It's easy to replace a broken hotshoe... somehow I'm sure Sony made that BNC to be part of some $400 PC board assembly. + labour!
Does the Teradek do the negotiation/bonding for the aircards too? You along with other stormchasers in the south have the whole live-from-the-truck thing down to a science. Can you post some pics of your truck? I'm waiting to hear about the Streambox Avenir Mini from NAB. We've demoed the Avenir 2 and it beat the Dejero in every department even with only two LTE cards vs FIVE HSPA+ and one LTE card on the Dejero. (not to mention it doesn't look like some kid bought parts off Tigerdirect and shoved 'em into a Pelican case! )

Yea, I'll post some pics next time I have the car set up for a chase. Keep in mind I'm streaming SD, not HD. I streaming using the hotspot on my Verizon iPhone and the bandwith is just enough to stream SD in those rural areas. Even the quality of that stream is slightly degraded to ensure a smooth stream with no buffering or choppy picture.
With the Teradek, however, it looks like a HD LIVE shot from the SAT truck. To answer your other question, yes, the Teradek manages and splits the data between the five cards. Very impressive product. It just needs redesigned so the aircards can be placed inside the enclosure. |

So I had to triple check the date on that link to make sure April 1 didn't happen twice this year.

The Blackmagic Design camera looks like what I'd imagine an Apple camera to be..

You can tell it was designed by computer peripheral people. When did a 1/4 mini jack become a standard connection for sound. I can live with the mini xlr jacks on the red but this is really a pain to work around if you are trying to capture balanced audio.

Not impressed with Blackmagic at the moment....
Asked them about a firewire to SDI converter for the '570 for plugging into the satellite points at the racetracks..... all I got was "use thunderbolt". Sigh....

They would work great right out of the box, but would be obsolete in 4 years and you would have to buy all new cameras because they would change all the connection types and software requirements.
