Is SONY finished? Hard to believe but could be true.
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/04/15/te...gaoc2UjkaaXZTw SONY today is worth 1/30th of Apple. The weird thing is that in 2003, SONY was contemplating buying APPLE, but passed, because they only controlled 3% of the computer market. Just one of many mistakes along the way. |

Good.
They deserve what they get. The company has been greedy and making some stupid moves in the TV market for the past decade. Sometimes it takes a while to "get what you deserve", but eventually you do. |

If you read the Steve Jobs book you'll find an interesting section about Sony. It talks about the iPod and iTunes and how Sony completely dropped the ball on both even though they were huge in the music industry. I would highly recommend reading the book or listening to it in digital format.

We went into negotiations with SONY almost a year ago. When we started they warned us that SONY stands for Soon, Only Not Yet. Now, nearly a year later, all the original employees have been replaced and we're starting over... sort of, but Not Yet.

I know the article focused mainly on the consumer side of things at Sony, but it seems to parallel the broadcast side, as well. Used to, you would look in a TV station or network or a freelancers vehicle and everything you saw was Sony. Not now.
The times have been few and far between since I've bought any Sony equipment in the last ten years. I just bought one of their new OLED 17" monitors in December. That was the first piece of broadcast gear that I've bought since I believe 2006. And that was a replacement CRT monitor for my Betacam. And I bought that in 2003. My last two broadcast cameras since then have both Panasonic. And three out of four of my HD monitors are Panasonic. Sony got complaisant and fell behind. I like the picture on my OLED, but the design isn't nearly as good as what Panasonic is churning out. I don't want to see Sony go under, the market always needs competition to keep everyone on their toes, but they do need a little "comeuppance" to bring them back into reality.

I'd just like them to support professional editing again.
