The Ballad of Granny

I'm a lucky man. Often hearing other guys vent about that old battle axe of a mother-in-law of theirs, I've never had a reason to vent. She's placed me on a pedestal since the day we met.
She started showing signs of Alzheimer's about ten years ago. In the early stages, I delt with it by giving her her own comedy segment on one of my shows and she soon had her own youtube channel called Adventures of Granny:

She and I (and my kiddoes) always had a blast making these spoof clips. By the time she turned 80 though, no humor could be found in her condition.
My wife and I have nursed here for quite some time in our home but this week, it's all coming to a head as our house meets no standards for such a feat.
Mixed with emotion, I jotted down a tune for Granny... love ya girl.

I met Granny the night I took Nan on our first date.
My belly hurt from just now eatin' but she made supper anyway.
She had s Fogelberg collection and meanass crazy cat.
She had a baby grand piano that I still aint gave back.

And just a few months later, at that exact same place.
I asked her for her daughter as tears streamed down her face.
Then we giggle-cried together, and just before I left
she made one more ham sandwich and then wished me the best.

(chorus)
That's the ballad of Granny.
She was my bud.
She had a whole lot of crazy thoughts and a lot of love.
I got you. Don't worry. She's in the best of hands
We'll take you on our journeys
or at least call when we can.

Goodnight Dorothy Jean

Last night I talked with Granny for the very last time.
It seems 80 years of memories somehow took her mind.
Although she'd spoke of Dallas, I took her to the hills
spending our last day together trying to hide my guilt.
But as we stood there lookin' at the prettiest place I've seen
she held my hand and whispered "You sure were good to me."
Then she asked if this were Heaven. So I smiled and said "You bet."
And she made one more ham sandwich and then wished me the best.
(chorus)
That's the ballad of Granny.
Man, she was my bud.
She had a whole lot of crazy thoughts and a lot of love.
He's got you. Don't worry. You're in the best of hands.
You're going on a journey and I be there when I can.

Goodnight Dorothy Jean
