"Poor Man's" HD conversion

Just thought I'd pass along a workaround that I figured out. On occasion, we get video that is 16:9, but not converted to SD 4:3. The result is 16:9 "squashed" into the 4:3 aspect. So, the video is distorted and everybody is skinny. We use Grass Valley's NewsEdit. I've found that doing a resize effect (sizing at 100 percent), and then dialing the "X-aspect" to 1.30 works great. The end result is that you stretch the video horizontally, and it appears normal.

under aspect ratio you can also dial in -33.33 and then you will get a letterboxed frame should you choose to play that direction.

Cutting in Vegas you can set the output to standard DV (.909) and it will letterbox it. It is a long render though.
