Do any of you have a mission statment for for staff? I remember reading one, from KARE or KMGH maybe, a few years ago. Something like "to enetertain, inform and enlighten with each story that we do."

Ours is simple:

At KMSP/WFTC, photojournalist and editors strive to WOW people every day by being team-focused, community-connected and dedicated to excellence.

This can be achieved by first dedicating ourselves to the highest ethical standards possible. All photojournalist and editors, including our reporters, and managers, should ensure we live our mission everyday – and do so ethically.

Our photojournalist/editors main responsibility is using good judgment when communication visual and audio messages to the audience which the station hopes to reach. These messages need to be easily understood, clear, concise, accurate, and true. The use of shot selection, editing pace and technique are all-important in making the comprehension of a story key.

The stories selected for our newscast are audience focused; meaning they should take the viewer somewhere, show the viewer something and help the viewer feel something. With each story shot, our photojournalists/editors consistently try to work on the following:
  • We try to seek out the surprise element in a story while capturing natural moments that will make our product memorable.

  • Sequencing video, whether used with voiceovers or packages, is a foundation of visual storytelling and is used whenever possible.
  • Steady and creatively framed shots have been associated with great photojournalism. We work on this daily in an effort to keep this tradition alive.
  • Consistent lighting for live shots and interviews.

  • Seeking out and recording clean natural sound.
  • HAVE FUN!
