Cameras for VJs

They like the small size (possible by the 1/3" CMOS chips) because a lot of them go to fairly small women.
Just a slight correction... the V1 camera has a 1/4" CMOS sensor with the pixels in a diagonal arrangement.

I have an EX1 and I love it! I normally shoot with Betacam sized cameras (currently a XDCam HD 700) but the EX1 can preform just as well as the 700 in most areas and is 1/4 the cost. It's uncomfortable to hand-hold for long periods of time without a brace of some kind. Other than that I love it. Non-linear acquisition is expensive but if you are doing daily news it will make editing a breeze.

ex1 ex2 z5

The EX-1 A sweet camera indeed! handles lo light well I belive too right? for the sholder the ex3 is easier to use but more bux....

I would like to see a z5 in a sholder mount config as it has a 20 lends and is wide at the wa setting without using adapter.

I have started using the hd1000 but regret not having xlr.

alas I am pissed as I had a cord from xlr to 1/8 pin and the mayor buzzed when she spoke. what am I missing? impeadance issues? advice please?

Back on and out of lurk mode.

One camera that I have not seen on the list is the Pana 200A or the 170. I have used the EX1 and it's a neet camera but the GOP image and the CMOS really are a big turn off for me since you get the scan lines with flashes. The 170 is a sweet setup with one of the few cameras in that price range to come with a CCD still. The P2 format also makes editing footage on the fly nice and easy with a laptop and a decent NLE setup. Yes it is not 1920x1080 like the EX1 but I found that while driving or in an area with lots of flash bulbs or Lightning, you get wicked scan lines that ruin the footage. If your doing 70 MPH and shooting out the side or even do a fast pan on a tripod you can get the tilted image effect since it is not a global shutter.

Otherwise, I love the EX1 but if given the option, I will take a P2 setup to run and gun with.

cmaos and flashing

I have the hd1000 sony which as a single 1/2.9 sensor and I have not seen any big problems I have heard of but I have not pulled any stills yet at a flash point.

Have not tried shooting sidewise at 70 mph... I will have to experiment with that....

Any thoughts on if the single sensor does better with the flashing compared to the 3 chip?

EX1 XD Cam Example.

Since I figured I would be asked, I put together a sample video of some lightning that I shot while driving.

http://www.lightningboy.net/content/lightningcmosexampleflv

This is three clips of lightning while driving. The first part of each clip is the normal speed. The second part is slowed down 50% to show the scan lines from the CMOS.

If this was shot on a CCD setup, the footage would be great for stock but since this is shot on CMOS, the scan lines ruin the footage.

This was shot on a EX1 while storm chasing. If you want I can upload the full frame 1920x1080 Mpeg2 to your server to review the footage but it will be pretty huge.

Bottom line, EX1 is a sweet camera but not for what I do. I will give up the full frame rolling shutter for the P2 global shutter just to get a cleaner image in the end in DVCPROHD even if it is not true 1920x1080.

Also, not to rip on Sony because the Z1U is a sweet camera with CCD setup. Just bummed they did not go CCD with the EX1.

I guess if your just shooting interviews and basic news, the EX1 will work just fine.

I just need something more for the extreem weather...
