What do you do to exercise after work?

I do not currently do anything and I feel tired at work. Even with 8 to 9 (or less) hours of sleep.

I'm no role model, but, I have been working out off and on for a couple of years now, and I notice that I definately have more stamina when I am actively working out. I am stressing cardio, and back and upper body strength.

I bought the Winsor Pilates DVDs... they seem to be working for me, it's low-intensity so I don't sweat, but some of those sets have made me hurt the next day... I still can't do the "roll up" where you use your stomach muscles to do a sit-up like maneuver, and a slow controlled descent back down... obviously my "powerhouse" aint much of a powerhouse.

I always stretch before I go into work especially my lower back. But.. it still hurts.. especially today after some major shoulder-shooting action waiting on the red carpet at the Toronto film festival. I try not to think about the PD-150s beside me, and look only to those with SX and HD cameras. :)

My wife's an MD; her advice... as much of a proper diet as possible, proper sleep routine, exercise, and...

Try drinking more water. Most people do not get enough water. How could it possibly hurt unless you're stuck in a long line somewhere? Another thing most people don't get enough of...

Try to get outdoors- weather permitting; even if it's only for a few hours a week.

As for the exercise thing, any type is fine. Start out small and work your way to a longer program from there.

I exercise before work since my in-time is 10am. I swim M/W/F and do the elliptical trainer/Crunch Machine/LifeCycle thing on Tue & Thurs.

Unfortunately the last month has been extremely hectic. I hope to get back on schedule starting tomorrow. :(

I'm with Tippster. SWIM! When i don't swim i've got a sore back by the end of the day...and my body feels torn up by the end of the week. But, when i do swim...friday feels like tuesday...and i don't even think about my back. When i'm not working out...slinging gear around is never more difficult. Hit the pool. Do laps until you feel like you're gonna puke. I also try to get a massage twice a year.

I'm having a difficult time finding the motivation to get up early for exercise. I turn off the alarm and roll over.
But if I put it off until after work... I only put it off again until evening... and by then, I'm often too tired to hit the gym at all.
So I think the best time is in the am.
If only I had a drill sergeant!!!

I posted here about a year ago, having back problems, and the lack of exercise. Tippster, Shakey and others suggested swimming. I've been going to the pool every M,W,F for a year now,Also took up the game of Golf. MEGA results no more back pains, my weights down and I feel so much better. So JUST DO IT Swim, Run,Lift, Play Hoops, Hit the Links Whatever it takes to bring the heart rate up.

I do 16-oz. curls with my buddies Bud & Samuel.

Seriously...I go to the local health club & do the standard weight-stuff that most high-school & college kids do: Bench/military/curls/squats/pull-ups. I also take my dog out for vigorous fetch/ball sessions (he's a big ol' Lab.) You don't have to do any of the "fancy" stuff (i.e. Pilates/yoga/aerobics.) Just do the basic weightlifting stuff at the health club!

My recommendations for best three exercises for photogs: Pull-ups, bench press & squats.

If you only do these three, lugging around the camera and tripod will feel like NOTHING. And you don't even have to copy the "monsters" in the gym: Just do what you can...light weights.

Good luck--and have fun while you do it!!!

A few years agoI went out and spent around $800 dollars on a mountian bike.It sat in my garage for a few months before I really used it,because I could not find anyone to ride with.

But when i got that bike ont that first single track trail in the north carolina mountians with my buddies from the station, it was the best feeling of exercise I have ever had.

And just today in my new home town of napa ca my brother and I found a trail that would kick the socks off even "Linslinger" who is an avid mountian biker....

"Bike on Photogs"

Aww, Newshawk - ya beat me to it! I was just about to chime in and register my vote for mountain biking as a cure for what ails ya. In fact I just finished tweaking my ride for an early morning jaunt, and was remembering the time you changed my thinking on the effects of gravity on big, strapping photogs like yourself. Glad to hear you're blistering the trails out West. Ever get those handlebars fixed? :P

I've still got the wobble in the rear tire from the last time Newshawk and I went out on a ride throught the mountains of Randolph County.

We went on a 15 mile, mostly uphill, trek through a National forrest, ONE day after a snowstorm late last year.

It was a lot of uphill but the payoff was in some of the views, and the mostly downhill final Two miles! I think we were lost in the woods for about 4 hours.

There are great pictures of this event(5 in particular) that I can share as soon as I can get my web software to function properly, or if someone wants to volunteer to post them for me I can email them.

Linslinger,

No they are not. I still lean a little to the left...

I still kicked my brothers ass on the ride or should I say the trail did. pictures of trail rash coming soon......

Hey Chris If I remember correctly because of that 15 mile ride, crashing ,getting decapitated by low branches, frost bite and falling off 2 or 3 cliffs head first I called in sick to work the next day and Linslinger had to work my shift..
sorry sp.

well, after 15 years a good 8 of really steady
swimming, my shoulders are trashed.
they sound like microvaing popcorn when i rotate them anywhere close to my head.
a damn shame cause that was the funnest, most satisfing, self rewarding exercise i have ever done.

I never lost weight though.

anyway i now bike to work every day (on a 26" and 24" BMX crusier, thats NO gears to you!)6 miles each way and a 14 mile street ride with other 20" & 24" guys every sunday morning.
Its a close second to swimming, or so I tell myself.
also, 2 step areobic classes a week.
seems like a lot written down.

anyway, any exercise vital to ones health in our carrers.

i'm with tippster on this...not the swimming part (for me) but the TIME!

i'm also a 10:00 starter and go to 6:00 and usually beyond.

EXERCISE BEFORE WORK AND YOU'LL HAVE ENERGY THROUGHOUT THE DAY!

when i get to work at 10:00, i've been up for 5 1/2 hours...have already run 5-10 miles...plus ellipticals and ab work. every day. i lift 2-3 times a week for about an hour. keying on lat pull-downs for those back stabilizing lattisimus (sp?) muscles...abs/crunches for core strength...lateral raises for the deltoids...and leg extensions for the quads to supplement the hamstring work the running accommodates.

like anything...just get into the rhythm. get up early ONE day. that night you'll be ready for bed earlier...listen to your body and enjoy the sleep rather than watching letterman or even the daily show...get up early again...you're on the way.

i hit the ground running at work while everyone else is struggling to stir their coffee...makes the day fly! when I get home...I still have the energy to play ball with my son...go out with my wife...whatever...i'm actually thriving on WAY LESS sleep than without a vigorous exercise regimen. it's 10:30 now...I'll hit the sack tonight around 11:30...be up at 4:30..at the gym by 5:00...home by 8:30....coffee...paper...cereal... and on to work.

good luck with whatever works for you...it's well worth the investment.

5-10 miles? That's pretty impresive. I like to run but it seems if I go for too long its kind of bad on my knees. It seems like no matter what excersice I do I'll always have my fat photog face. I miss my boyish figure, maybe I'll start running cross-country too.

well, videohead...and anyone else...

if you're thinking about running and you haven't in a while, let me recommend that one of the first things you should do is get the RIGHT pair of shoes for you. (the wrong shoe? i have immediate and intense knee pain...the right shoe? like running on clouds.)

which in all likelihood probably means going to a store that specializes in running. the good ones have treadmills and experienced sales folx who can watch you run and see whether you overpronate...underpronate and any other much more subtle nuance to your stride that'll determine what's the right type of shoe for you.
take a well used pair of your shoes with you...wear patterns can help the salesperson determine what you need.

also...sizing...you'll probably want to go up a 1/2 or full size from street shoes. i've been a 10 1/2 30 years. my Brooks Adrenalines are 11 1/2

i'll go to one of these places...pay a premium for their expertise once...then order subsequent pairs online at a large discount until i need a new style for whatever reason...usually a discontinuation of a model.

shoes are only good for 300-500 miles.
for me that means new shoes every 2 1/2 months at the outside...so if i continue to save $30+ per pair online, it really makes a difference.

if i push that time frame, i start to get knee pain. pushed it for two weeks once. ended up having to take two weeks off (from running, not work).

if you're having pain...GET THE RIGHT SHOES...and good luck.
