View Full Version : Sennheiser wireless mic defect?

After reading reviews saying the Sennheiser evolution wireless G2 mic was the best on the market for the money, I made the purchase back in December. Straight out of the box there was a short in the tram mic where the wire meets the rubber casing at the 1/8th inch plug. B&H (love them!) replaced the unit.
Now, after a few short months of light use (shooting an educational video in my free time), there is a short in the exact same location. Anybody else have this issue? Is this a defective product or am I just lucky?
I've just written Sennheiser about this and will be sending the mic in for repair. I wonder if this is going to be a never ending issue with this mic. After great reviews and $550 I expected more.

I have five G2's in constant use by students, and haven't had any problems in over 18 months.
I guess one of us is lucky...

I also have the G2 and they have done nothing but perform. And I purchased one set used. The trax has some wear on the back of it (the sticker has rub marks) but they have been great.
I don't know what to tell you about having the same failure twice. Maybe, don't buy lotto ticket?
Maybe there is another mic you could try? I remember seeing 3 or so different options for mics for that unit. One is a larger head but it might do the trick.

Very interesting... Ok, so no lotto tickets for me!
Well, this is actually good news. Maybe this will be the last time I have this problem.
Thanks for the responses!

I've never had that problem either. You could shrink wrap it or maybe wrap it in electrical tape for support.

You're not alone. We had a cable short out at the 1/8" plug as well. Ours was after several years of use though. When the new one came in we put some gaff tape around the mic wire and rubber shield to take some of the bending tension out of it.

I don't know if your mic is defective somehow, but a short at the connector is common because that is where the cable can bend at extreme angles. I have several trams that have shorted out there. Not out of the box, new, but after some use. It doesn't even need to be heavy use, just a few times where the cable kinks and you are likely to have a problem.

Welcome to the joys of non-XLR/mini-plugs connections. Our engineers have to replace my plug-end every month or so because the damn thing always gets bent.

I unscrew, and keep in a little plastic sandwich box, all of my relevent parts. So they don't get banged up in transport. Also, I make sure that nothing is rubbing against them.
Unscrew the pieces when you store them, if they go into a bag that could make the cables pull a memory.
