From Yahoo.com:

ROCKVILLE, Md. - No matter what the cameras say, some drivers are refusing to pay dozens of $40 speeding fines. Who? Police officers.

In the last eight months of 2007, Montgomery County's new speed cameras recorded 224 cases in which police vehicles were recorded traveling more than 10 mph over the speed limit, according to department records.

Supervisors dismissed 76 of those citations after determining the officers were responding to calls or had valid reasons to break the speed limit.

But that left 148 who didn't have that excuse, and about two-thirds of those citations haven't been paid, said police Lt. Paul Starks.

I at least give Tom Manger (the Chief) credit for saying "we expect them to be held to the same standards as the public"...

It's a CYA statement, but it at least "says" the right thing. He could've just as easily said "We'll look into it".

My guess is these 168 guys and gals will end up paying. One way or the other. I'm sure a list of names of those refusing to pay will get leaked by The Brass sooner or later, and shortly afterwards we'll be knocking on various doors throughout the county, offering these officers a chance to "explain" themselves on tape.

I saw this in the paper today:

"Whistle-blower suit targets state police chief
Trooper says he was penalized after giving another officer a ticket."
