I spent the first of the week in Iowa…. On the trail of John Edwards.

First, I’ll say it’s lovely country with nice people and we ate a really good steak dinner. But you can keep the cold, ice and snow! Five degrees Monday morning with wind chills in the negative teens!

For all you men and women covering the candidates, good for you, I hope you’ll not see me in your viewfinders. And to the nice people of Iowa, have you ever considered holding the caucus in the Florida Keys? Nice weather, get out of town for a few days and pick a President while enjoying a warm sunset!

Here’s the first of my stories…

Oh, come on, it's not that bad! I guarantee the weather's better here than it is in Minnesota!

The producers here will have fun filling their shows once the candidates have packed up and left after January 3.

come up here to the Le Toile du Norde. Or "The Star of the North" Minnesota country sir... We just had our SECOND (2nd) big snow storm, and we'll have a third this weekend. Hell, my '75 corvette is sitting outside next to the garage with about 5-6 inches of show on it. (Roommate's chevelle get's the stay all warm and dry in the garage. :(

Hey Nooze, are you sure that doesn't translate to "The toilet of the north"?

Just kidding. A 'warm' hello from Dallas where my grass is still green. I think this is the first time I can remember the grass staying green this late into the fall.

AMEN! I lived in Iowa for WAY too long (no offense to my buds who still suffer thru those IA winters). Great place to raise a fam, warm hospitality, GREAT photojournalism, but DAMN its cold this time of year! I've realized (in this line of work, anyway) that I can't do cold.

Ever had to stay on the side of a snow-covered highway for 3 hours after the liveshot because a live truck mast won't come down? You don't want to.

Ever had to try to untighten and collapse light stands with fingers you can't feel? You don't want to.

Hey, Des Moines does GREAT photojournalism (3 small market SOYs), so it's worth the pain of winter... but you might lose some toes to frostbite in the process...

Can't compete with the MN or CA kids, but the coldest live shot I ever did was -26f on the lakefront in Chicago (real temp, windchill was -80)Mast came down ok,but cables were frozen solid and had to be shoved into the van to thaw so they could be coiled.

With all the rain we've had this year it had better stay green until next Spring.

I have covered every Iowa caucus since 1976 so I can speak with some authority on the climate in the Hawkeye state.
Iowa winters can be challenging but they are far from the worst out there(I grew up in North Dakota). Get through a couple of months of cold and you will be rewarded with a very nice place to live. I fully intend to spend the rest of my life up in the Loess Hills if I can pull it off.
Currently I live in Missouri Valley, Iowa and commute to Omaha which is having a horrible week but that's for another thread.
I can give you two reasons to give Iowa a shot. Iowa has some of the best public schools in the country and for the second reason check out the link below.

I walked by this house last week. It's a beauty and it's a twenty five minute commute to Omaha.

Welcome to the circus that is the Iowa Caucus season. Winter hasn't even begun yet. Keep your batteries warm and pack your warm socks if you're planning a visit. I am taking the last couple weeks of the year off and plan to spend some time in a warmer place or at least not out manning a live camera to show what blowing snow looks like!

Our sales people love the caucuses especially with the races being close.
