View Full Version : The best sports story you're NOT covering

So you're covering the NFL, the baseball playoffs and nascar but there's a sport that is far more interesting that you're not covering, Formula One. And the title fight is the closest in years. And it all comes down to the final race of the season, the Brazilian Grand Prix THIS Sunday.

Lewis Hamilton, a rookie and the first black man to race in F1, could do something that no other rookie has ever done in Formula One, win the World Championship. The 22 year old phenom holds only a 3 point lead over his teammate and current World Champion, Fernando Alonso and only a 7 point lead over Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen. Any of these drivers could win the championship in Brazil.

Hamilton could have won it 2 weeks ago in China, but a mistake while coming in for a pit stop saw those hopes dashed. Now it all comes down to the final race of the season.

So you have the closest title fight in years and a rookie (also the first black man in F1, reminder - there's none in nascar) who could make history by becoming the first rookie to win a World Championship.

And instead you're covering the NFL, baseball and nascar.

The championship is also filled with back drama spying, cheating, record $100 million fine that was NOT appealed. Fueding teammates in Alonzo and Hamilton, that results in a "special monitor" in the team garage area to make sure everything is "fair" for each driver.

Lewis Hamilton has been informed by his team that he should "subdue" his celebration should he win the Championship since McLaren is the guilty spying, cheating, $100 million dollar fined team!

Race starts at 11:30 am - 2 pm Eastern time on Speed Channel on Sunday.

So stay up late on Saturday Watch the Champ Car race on ESPN Classic at 11 pm eastern then get up for F1 on Speed.

What the hell are you talking about F1? What percentage of Americans give a damn about F1? Humm... about F'n .01. Good luck with all that! The rest of us will be watching good ol' American NFL FOOTBALL, NASCAR, and oh yeah, the WORLD SERIES of BASEBALL?!?!

Yeah thanks I've been trying to forget that. Good luck to both teams and I hope the ref doesn't decide the game... not at all bitter

And, if you can't play defense, is it really a sport? Driving is more of a skill, anyway...

Obviously you don't watch F1 or any other form of "real" motorsports. There are a lot of defensive moves in road racing, psychology too. In nascar, they just crash each other out of the way. It's like a demolition derby that turns left.

Lewis Hamilton on the outside of Row 1, Kimi Raikkonen in Position 3 and Fernando Alonso in P4. Kimi's teammate, Felipe Massa is on the pole. Will Massa try to block Hamilton so that Raikkonen can get in front? It'll be an interesting start tomorrow.

Right now, I'm Watching the ALMS finale from Leguna Seca. Great battle between the Porsche & Ferrari in GT2.

College football and basketball are the real tickets. Everything else is 2nd tier or lower.

And, I hope you're enjoying yourself .01, really, I do!

But, let's put this in perspective. How 'bout an experiment? Take to the streets of Baltimore and ask people to name three NFL players. Three NBA players. Three MLB players. And, JUST ONE F1 driver? THEN, try and tell everyone what is the "best sports story not being covered"!?

I'm sure its very competitive and exciting, if you're into it, but its NOT a sport and very few in this country care. And, THAT is reflected in its lack of coverage.

Although he's being pretty rude about it, I have to agree with newshooter3. I don't know about formula 1 and I don't care to. On some level I still try to "root for the home team" when it comes to team sports like baseball, football and to a lesser extent basketball. When it comes to racing, there really isn't a home team. It's individuals who, I assume, are part of racing teams but they don't represent my city or area and I really don't have a reason to know or care about them.

Most of us have played football, basketball and baseball. We understand the kind of athleticism we are seeing at the pro level. While we all drive, few of us go much over 80mph with any regularity. I don't doubt those pro drivers are extraordinarily talented, but it's lost on me. To watch cars drive the same circle of road hundreds of times over a period of hours is NOT my idea of a good time.

Congrats to the Springboks... they were the best team in the finals...

I think the concept of 'teams' in motorsports is crazy. If the checkered flag goes to an individual, that's not a 'team' in my eyes. If on the other hand, an entire team was crowned as victors when any member of said team won the race, I'd be more on board with that idea.

Besides, I was always a fan of drag racing.

Just in case you missed it-

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Kimi Raikkonen is known as ``The Iceman,'' and he more than kept his cool Sunday, winning the Brazilian Grand Prix and capturing the Formula One title in the tightest race for the championship in 21 years.

And what race it was. Hamilton basically threw it away on turn 4 on the first lap. I think he was feeling the pressure. Then his clutch problems caused insult to injury. Got to hand it to him though, Hamilton He fell back from 2nd to 18th after his clutch problem but he clawed his way back to 7th, it just wasn't enough as he needed to finish 5th or better to clinch it.

But who would have ever thought Kimi would have come on that strong. I mean it was such a long shot for him to win that nobody thought it would have happened. Alonso just didn't have enough to take it to Raikkonen.

The final points championship were seperated by just 1 point from first to third and look like this:

1st - Kimi Räikkönen - 110
2nd - Lewis Hamilton - 109
3rd Fernando Alonso - 109

Hamilton finishes 2nd in points because he had more podium finishes than Alonso.

WooHoo! :D :D
