From FoxSports.com:

SEATTLE (AP) - Talk about bad omens.

An overhead NBC television camera mounted on wires collapsed onto the turf during a timeout early in Sunday night's game between the New Orleans Saints and Seattle Seahawks, almost hitting two Seattle players and causing a 10-minute delay.
The Saints had just called timeout with 11:24 remaining in the first quarter when the camera slumped and then fell a few yards from quarterback Matt Hasselbeck and the rest of the huddling Seahawks. After the camera was righted somewhat off the ground, it fell again — and nearly hit Bobby Engram as the receiver was walking to the sideline.

Game officials then cleared both teams from the middle of the field while the network got the camera back up to normal height. As the camera moved up and down the field for testing, Seahawks coach Mike Holmgren looked up at its every move with his mouth agape. When the camera moved to the sideline, Seattle's players all cleared out from beneath it.

"That's total access right there," Hasselbeck said. "It wasn't our night, I guess."

Guess not. Seattle went on to a 28-17 loss that had the home crowd booing the three-time defending NFC West champions.

"I thought it was going to hit Matt," running back Shaun Alexander said. "You kind of wanted to laugh. But at the same time you were like, 'What else can happen?"'

After a 10-minute delay, the game resumed with the camera parked above the Seahawks bench area — with players and coaches making sure they did not stand under it.

"I'm going to talk to my lawyer and get back to you," Hasselbeck joked.

"I just feel really fortunate it didn't hit me."

Just before the game resumed, referee Jeff Triplette announced: "If any live ball were to touch the wires overhead, there will be a replay of the down, by rule."

So I guess MR will say "See, if you had 30 VJs there, you wouldn't need an overhead camera and that wouldn't have happened..."

Kinda had to wonder when this would happen. I remember seeing that thing a few years ago at the NFC championship in Philly and wondering how they kept it from ever getting in the way... punts, long passes, etc. And wondered how secure it was. I guess we have our answer. Wonder if the NFL will say, "no more cams on wires overhead."

I don't think that cam should be allowed. How unfair is that if you have a wide open reciever down field who beat blown coverage and you miss the opportunity for a TD cause the pass hit a wire!!! I'd rather have the guy with a steady cam in the backfield like the XFL did. Why don't they just mount a little HD camera on a remote control mini blimp and pay a guy to fly that thing over the field during the game???? Can I have that job???

WHEW! Glad it didn't hit Engram, he's on my fantasy team!

Really shocked nothing like this has happened before with these cameras, and I'm sure this won't be the last time either.

A couple of weeks ago a punt hit a camera wire, but no one realized it until afterwards.

Any video of that? I bet it was pretty funny to see.

Ok..so you have a camera falling to the ground...and you park it over the bench area? Wheres the logic in that?

Thats why they wear helmets! Not for the hits on the field but TV cameras falling from the sky.

Is that the rig Garrett Brown designed, or is it a cheap knockoff?

Must be an NBC 2.0 thing. Probably less setup time.

It was in use again tonight during the ESPN game.

I've always secretly hoped that camera would take a dive or get nailed with a punt. As cool as people think it is, I've always found it annoying, both on TV and at games. (OK, especially at games.)

I agree. I don't often see the camera keep up with the play or maintain a solid good shot. And usually all they use it for is to show the players running down the field on a kickoff or punt.

The entire existence of this camera and that annoying sideline cable camera during basketball games can be directly traced to video games. As productions try to cater to new viewers, they see the need to make the live game feel like what the kids see on their X-Box...

Views evolve...Not saying I like it, but...

At first I didn't like it, and I'm not a huge football fan. Now I think its kind of nice as long as its not overused. It does give a nice prespective to how the plays unfold.

Wasn't that camera system developed by the same company?
