Wow! Take a look at this.....

I know Lost in Alaska works at this station, so I'm sorry, but my opinion is that this is pretty stupid. I know other stations across the country are doing this, and it doesn't suprise me in the slightest to see KIMO doing it, but I still think it is dumb. And I can guarantee you that it won't help KIMO close the ratings race on KTUU who seems to always dominate the ratings (maybe because they have a good sized photog staff and seem to concentrate more on the visual aspect of TV). Ya, I bet using crappy cellphone video shot by viewers is just going to make for riveting television (of course there are exceptions) but wow, just wow!!! Maybe KIMO should concentrate on building up a photog staff instead of overworking the couple of real photogs they have, and maybe, just maybe get some gear that isn't 20 years old...... When I used to work for them I LOVED all the excuses they had for not getting new gear....
"we can't afford a light kit for you"
Ya right, I was able to "afford" one on a news photogs salary and then they wanted me to use my personal light kit and camera when their crap went down. And then my favorite....when I asked for approval to buy a $5 pair of headphones so I could actually monitor the audio out of the camera (that's right, they didn't have headphones in the bureau I worked)....they DENIED the "expense"
Sorry for the rant, I just hate the direction local TV is going. On the other hand it does help my business producing TV spots as most of my customers hate the crappy production values local TV stations use and are willing to pay me to do something better. But still, I don't like what my "brothers" in TV have to deal with....I remember only too well my frustrations working in local TV.
