We are looking into buying an powerbook with final cut pro editing. My question to you all is what is the best way to ingest video through our sony sx laptop deck. It doesn't have firewire. I looked at the blackmagic capture card, but I was told that it can't be installed on a laptop.
Your help and thoughts are appreciated.

They make a whole slew of little $700 doohickeys, with control to get full HD, SD, and other formats into firewire, with deck control.
It's a tiny little box, so you can just draw a diagram, throw it in your kit, and you should be good to still go portable.
Anyone else got any other ideas?

If you can use firewire for your ingest, it could be as simple as buying a PCMCIA firewire card.

Which SX deck is it? Don't you have a firewire card option for some of them?

Plug your deck and your computer into that, and the the video and timecode from the deck will be converted to dv. From there, it can be imported to final cut pro over firewire. The pro version of that box will also allow vtr control from the computer.

Canopus has some boxes that will work but quality will dimenish slightly. You can't go wrong with a AJA IoLa box and you'll get great quality. Stay away from miranda, far away.

I use a similar set up. I shoot SX and have a PowerBook laptop editor with FCP. For the office I use a Datavideo bi directional converter, the DAC-30. It' has all the input and outputs you will need. We have a second converter, the Canopus, to use in the field and on trips. A simple box that is small and easy to travel with. It uses RCA in/outputs. Our engineers made cables to take on the road that adapt for XLR/BNC cables.. these can be used coming straight out of the camera or hooked up to a deck. This set up has been working well for me. Let me know if you have any further questions.
