A Step Above Productions

Last week I had a shoot for a producer from California for a documentary he is working on. Two of his interviews where at a South Florida resort and were speaking at a convention. The producer and I had never met face to face before this day – we had only spoken on the phone and through emails, anyways I pull up to the valet and call the producer he meets me, we introduce our selves, unload my gear, and head into the resort. We head rite into an elevator to take us to the area he had reserved for the interviews. The elevator doors open and who is standing at the door?
My grandmother (aka Mommom), I surprisingly say “hi”. She is looking down and says “hello” not realizing it is me. I say “hi Mommom”. She looks up and screams, “What are you doing here?” The producer is looking at me like I am crazy – keep in mind we had just meet face-to-face not two minuets earlier.
I explain to her what I am doing and ask her the same. She goes to the resort with her friends once a year for a treat.
So now I try to remain professional and that is hard to do when your grandmother is kissing and hugging you.
I move on and start to work – we set up get and through the first interview, we start interview two and now comes Mommom in a robe with all her friends also in robes, they stop and wave behind the interview (ala Today on NBC). Now any and all credibility I may have along with professionalism are gone. She was out of view of the camera but we were all distracted. We stopped the interview, and I asked them to move on, but not before I had to kiss all her friends and explain what I was doing, they were all impressed.
Once we finished I apologized for everything to the producer. He got a big laugh out of it didn’t think anything less of me.
It is just hard to remain professional when your grandmother is waving at you in a robe with her friends.
