Where do you find generic music to put under serious long form stories? The slow music, piano, etc.? I like the music choices, for example, on Sportscentury and other ESPN stories. Our music library is sub-par to say the least.

Have you checked your Creative Services' music library? Or this is the Creative Services' library.

I believe if it's less than 0:15 you can use any song out there... More if your station has the license to the music (someone correct me if i'm wrong, not 100% sure on the time).

most broadcast stations have a ascap/bmi licensing agreement where you can use any music published under the ascap/bmi umbrella royalty free.
if you are producing a program to be distributed to other stations that might not have the ascap/bmi coverage, play it safe and work from the freeplay.com selections. some can be a bit cheesy, but if you dig long enough you might find that nugget of gold that takes your program to the promised land.

Once upon a time I worked with a really talented photographer/musican we called "Beef" Wellington.
He would from time to time bring in his guitar or a dobro and go into an edit bay and play. His compositions would then become the soundtrack to the story.
If you have the musical talent you could give that a try.
On a side note. Anyone remember the time when the John Tesh "Tour de France" albums was used alot in sports stories?

We just went over this rule at my station. Apparently, the rights to ascap music only covers live bumps and music that is playing at the scene of a story. I was told that we may not edit to music without a seperate license which is very costly. We can use generic music that we have licenced from a company like hollywood edge.
