I actually stumbled across my policy/agent right before I bought all of my gear about 9 - 9 1/2 years ago. Brad Buell in IL. My original policy was through The Hartford, but they(Hartford) dropped it because of a lot of false claims that they were geting. He replaced it with a similar policy that is underwritten by Montgomery Ins. I have at least $1,000,000 errors and ommisions/liability and $100,000 for equipment on and off premises. I just renewed last month and it was less than $1,500 for the year. And I just made a HUGE claim last March resulting from a theft, and they didn't drop me, in fact they let me raise my coverage, so I guess you can take that as a good sign.

That was $1500 for both liability and equipment?

Yep, liability and gear.

Brad Buell-Buell Insurance: 1-800-842-8355. I don't know if it still matters, but I originally stumbled across this when I first started out by looking around on the internet and saw a good deal, but I had to join an orginization to get it: WEVA-Wedding and Event Videographers Association. Obviously that's not what I do, but I paid the paltry membership fee and became eligible, I dropped the membership after a couple of years and have never been questioned about it.

Looks like it is here:

Buell Insurance (http://www.buellinsurance.com/weva.php)

Lots of questions about activities other than WEVA-type stuff on the application.

Come on, there's a little bit of wedding shooter in all of us, right? I can tell you I will sign up for WEVA if I can get rates that low.

So what you're saying is is that we should embrace the wedding photographer within?

Rates that low,I might actually shoot a wedding. :)
Every so often someone will ask if I shoot weddings.I tell them yes, and that I have some fine packages starting at $5000.That pretty much kills that conversation.
On the other hand, someone may say yes one day.

I am a member...though it's about to expire. They do have some very good articles in a new magazine they put out that is more centered about business stuff. It's obviously a group centered towards weddings and events, but they have a lot of ways to make extra money if you look at some of the materials they send and brainstorm. Is it worth the like $190 or whatever membership costs? Depends how much you use it I suppose...for most here I wouldn't think it would be worth it.

When I got started freelancing I joined the PPA because everyone was saying they had really low insurance rates. Turns out I after I joined I found out that the rates were low but I found even lower. Be sure to check around because you may just be wasting money on the membership.
