This week I worked four days, one with my 600, one with a 790 Digibeta PAL, one with a Varicam and another with a F900.

As expected the frequency that I use other formats beside the 600 is steadily increasing. Until now I’ve been charging my clients my full Betacam package and added-on camera rentals if I use other formats beside my 600 or my Z1. However times are changing and although I did not get any complains yet, I can sense unhappiness among my clients having to pay for a camera that I’m not using. Of course I don’t know if this is costing me jobs; for sure they will not tell me that. We both have mutual interest in keeping each other happy but I’m sure that when it comes to money loyalty takes a back seat.

I feel that in all fairness some adjustments have to be made, and unfortunately this will mean less money in my pocket as many clients are supplying the cameras because they have special deals with rental houses thus effectively eliminating any profit that could be generated from the rentals. Keep in mind that the rentals are being delivered to my door the day before the shoot and picked up the day after or the same evening of the shoot, so there’s no time involved in me picking up and returning the cameras to the rental house.

Let me add something to this, actually there’s extra time involved. Right after the camera is delivered after traveling thousand of miles via air and via delivery messenger I give it a full work-out. That’s at least one hour of my time.

I have been tossing a number of formulas to come up with a number but I would like to hear how others are handling this so I can follow some sort of uniformity, not as much as what we charge but how we charge.

Nino,
You're getting your full package rate PLUS the camera rental??? I bow to you, you 'da man!

The way I've been doing it when I rent a DigiBeta or 16:9 BetaSP (mine is 4:3 only), I've been charging $250 for the rest of my gear (lights, audio and grip) and the rental chage plus a fee for picking up & dropping off the rented camera, which typically involves driving to the DC area to do that.

For some strange reason, I have never asked if the rental house would deliver & pick up the camera for me. I expect them to charge me for that (rightly so) but it would save me the time, gas and wear & tear on the vehicle to do it.

I'd LOVE to charge full opackage rate PLUS the cost of the rental camera.

Nino, I too shot multiple formats this week - SP, Digi and Varicam. Welcome to the future. Fortunatly, I own all these formats so I do not have the rental house situation that you have.

For me, when I shoot someone else's gear, I typically charge a DP rate of $750-850 for the day, then I charge an additional $250 for suport gear. With these rates, I don't feel like I'm losing money if I turned down a job that required my own gear (at least with the BetaSP)

I've also found that most clients I work with are sympathetic to freelancers situation of multiple formats, and understand the increased rate when a camera needs to be rented.

Wow, I can't believe your clients would shell out for that...
Good idea to try an alternate formula.
Ed's above seems pretty decnt- you don't lose too much money, but don't have additional capital overhead either.

$850 + $250 = $1100 which as far as I know is the 'standard' betacam rate. So I don't see a discount there. But smoke em if ya got em!

I just now got off the phone with a client that owns their Z-1U. I offered $800 for labor + lights and audio and was turned down. Most clients are good with that number though.
I've probably done 20 days this year without camera for around $800 to $850.
At $800, I'm knocking off $300 for the camera, lenses and batteries. If picking up a camera was convienient, I'd sell my betacam right now but pick up and return is a big hassle for me.

I am able to rent a Varicam w/o a lens for $600, F900 for $800.
A F350 for about $500. I put my own HD lens on them. So, if I add those costs on top of my usual Betacam pkg. rate, it still totals out to about the common daily crew & package going rates for those types of camera packages. Varicam $2200, F900 $22-2400 & we're still trying to figure out a viable price niche for the F350. My guess is about $18-1900./10

Can you share where you get those HD rates? I'm getting $1100 for a Varicam with lens. I don't think I need to pay $400 for a lens rental.
Thnx

Bexel has a deal if you have an "open account" with them. Its usually 40% off list. They bought about 20 Varicams for the reality show Casino and they are now renting them cheaper than DigiBetas.
The stumbling point is that if you only rent it for a couple of days they charge you a shipping fee to bring the camera in from NY or Burbank.

I usually rent it from another Varicam owner that I know, because I never really know what to expect from a Bexel rental camera. Sometimes I don't have time to spend tweaking the menu of a Bexel rental just to get it to look decent, even with my own scene files.
