Hey all,
Need some advice as I continue the search for a new job.
I'm Canadian, now have just under 2 years experience--now at my second station, been here a year now--with a small market station (on the larger side of "small", though) which is not a part of a network.
I'd like to make the step up to a mid market, and technically I feel very ready to do that. But with the state of the Canadian TV news industry right now (one of the four networks basically dropped dead last month--hundreds of jobs toasted), I'm not sure that it's possible.
I've stopped enjoying my job for the past couple of months. The management here has no direction at all, the story assignments are getting more and more unfocused and random (following the local newspaper's feature stories literally every day), and the equipment I use has far too many hours on it and barely works. I'm really tired of it, and it's only been a year.
I've learned a lot from being here, worked with some talented folks--especially a couple shooters who are great, but I've plateaued in terms of what I'm getting out of being here. I know this kind of work environment is commonplace with small market stations, but man...
Anyway, I've put out a bunch of resumes/demos across the country (even tried the US, but was shut down because of the inevitable visa issues), but nothing has come up in the markets I'd like to work in (Calgary, Maritimes, Ottawa, etc.). It seems like a lot of "hiring from within" is going on.
I guess the question is...do you think I'll have to make a lateral move to another small market on a network in order to get anywhere? Or should I keep plugging away for "the big one"?
Any advice/experiences are appreciated, folks. Feel free to call me a whiner, because I certainly feel like one right now. Thanks.
