Bartlesville - A Bartlesville native and former photojournalist for NewsChannel 8 has been identified as one of three people killed in a helicopter crash off the coast of Oregon.

Tod Lilburn was part of a crew working on a documentary on the re-creation of the Lewis and Clark Expedition when the helicopter he was riding in crashed into the ocean in foggy weather at about 8 o'clock Sunday morning.

Also killed were pilot Peter Simpson and co-pilot Carol Forest.

Lilburn graduated from OU with a bachelor's degree in journalism. He worked at Channel 8 in the late 80s and early 90s before moving to WXII-TV in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to become Chief Photographer.

He and his wife, Koren, moved to San Diego in 1997. Tod was currently working at Channel 4 San Diego, where he had been recognized with an Emmy Award, three Golden Mike Awards, two LaPluma Awards and a Press Club award.

Lilburn was 41.

The NewsChannel 8 family sends its thoughts and prayers to Tod's family.

Although not very well.....I worked with him for a short time til he moved to channel 4. He was a great guy...a class act. Always had a great disposition. I think he had a young child about 7 or 8 years old.
Even though I didn't know him that well, I find myslef feeling some very heavy emotions over his death. Partly, I think, because he was a fellow photog and it is a stark reminder that we put oursleves in danger more often than the average joe.... But also because I know he was a terriffic guy and a great shooter who will be missed by anyone who ever met him.
Rip Todd...and my condolences to his wife and child.:(

I first met Tod back when he worked at KUSI and every time I saw him he was in a good mood and always laughing at your jokes or at least finding the light side of somethng. I didn't know him well just the usual see him once or twice a week at a presser or something like that but he was a happy go lucky kind of guy. He also like good story telling and good journalism which you couldn't find on a consistant basis at KUSI so when he got the chance to go to COX4 he jumped at it and man did he shine. ( COX4 is a padres owned cable only station that does a (inside san diego type show once a week). I would see him out on stories and envy him for the opportunities that he was getting ie long format stories with room for nat brks etc.
Anyway he was a great guy and a great photog. if he met you out in the field and you needed a tape or battery or whatever he would give you one. because even though you might be the competition you were always a fellow photog first.
my thoughts to Tods family and friends.
peace,
Lcp

Tod hired me way back in the day. He was just a great dude...loved his family, shooting great stories and talking about the NBA. He was the best chief photog I've ever worked for and the world is a little worse today with his passing.

God Bless his family.
