I'm not really sure why you're worried. Mike looks quite proud and mighty jovial about the concept, while somehow remaining completely oblivious to the fact that his bright, new idea is nothing new.

That's a great idea, Mike. We call them stringers, you jackass.

"I have a great idea for a device I like to call, 'The Wheel.'"

And he's wondering why his station tanks?

How appropriate that it fades to black while he is still talking.

I think that came from the bloggers 101 meeting he mentions on his website: www.wkrngm.com

Meanwhile Gannett presses forward with High-Definition field acquisition. If there's no difference to the viewer, then why bother?

Chicken little has been clucking a long time now.

ya that sounds great...get the public to do your jobs...I feel bad for the employees of the station...now they are looking for a reality anchor? I think it is rock bottom time....

Let's see: they tried one man bands, and that didn't work, because they couldn't compete on breaking stories, and most of the features stories were awful. They lost $11 million last quarter. The only thing cheaper than one man bands is getting home video...

RIP WKRN sounds more like it.

So now WKRN's newscast is going to look just as crappy as that video...?

I don't know about you, but I'm not worried about my job.

I know, why use video at all. It'll be cheaper to just use a blackboard and chalk. Have an anchor read the story and draw the pictures. That'll save a ton of money.

Watching that clip sent shivers up my spine.... they have taken a credible news operation and turned it into a local version of "America's Funniest Home Videos"..... it isn't my job I fear losing, it is the credibility I have built over the past three decades that I see slipping into oblivion when I have to fight with two dozen home shooters to get the video I need to tell a story..... This guy has opened a Pandora's Box....

Wow... we are gathered here today to say goodbye to WKRN.....
This guy will be selling used cars in 6 months....used news cars that is since they won't need those either

That is really scary! Good luck with that on WKRN.

Wow -- that's a great point. At least they won't have to preface everything with, "The following is a paid advertisement for..."

They used to call it "community access television". The cable channel that nobody watched except those who produced the garbage that ran there.

Congratulations WKRN. You have discovered another way to poke more holes in an already sinking ship.

So.... did he say that he was REPLACING his staff with bloggers? If so then I can see the comments here as being justified. Otherwise, no. And I watched the video - no mention of replacing his staff with bloggers. I think your careers are safe.

How is this different than MSNBC's CJ's or CNN's I-Reports? It isn't - yet no mention of either by the VJ party pooper crowd.. That's easy to explain though, considering these allegedly professional journalists are simply omitting the facts they don't want you to consider...If only WKRN is doing it then whoa, stand back, they've lost their minds! But the truth is, they're not. CNN and MSNBC and many other stations and their parent networks have been doing this for a couple of YEARS now. YEARS.

I look at Street's sig line and just have to laugh. Funny thing about facts, Mr. Street. Facts are like puzzle pieces... only useful for creating a clear picture if you have them all.

But hey... keep spinning and eventually maybe you'll make yourself sick. :D

This is different from the CJ/I-Report silliness (which I view largely as a publicity stunt) because WKRN isn't looking for primarily spot video, it's looking for complete packages. Public access is exactly what Sechrist is promoting as news.

It's a shame that someone thinks a broadcaster using public airwaves should be allowed to cut its news operation to the point that it's unable to provide a credible service to the community it's supposed to be serving.

You call that spin, NBS? Well...everyone's entitled to their opinion. And the term "spin" is just a perjorative that really means assembling facts into an argument that you don't like and/or can't refute.

But, according to some here, they would still be considered journalists like Josh Wolf and would deserve to be considered every bit as legitimate as the staffers at other stations. If Josh Wolf is really a journalist, then on what grounds could a station refuse a story from a PR company?

You are going too far to try and explain your dislike of Wolf. Yeah, we all think the kid is a goof and is muddying the waters.

Do you really need an explanation of why any media outlet can decide, on its own, what content to run?

BTW, I think the Mike video that started this thread was really lame, regardless of my opinion that VJ's are an aweful idea. He is akin to used car salesmen. I do think using YouTube is good thinking... but execution is so bad.

So you're telling me that if a guy like me (or you for that matter) shot a pkg and uploaded it to CNN via their I-Report BS that, if it was a good story, they wouldn't run with it? That they'd reply back saying "No thanks, we just want shakey cell phone cam videos and tornado chaser home movie footage"? Give me a break.

Allow me to coin a phrase from your buddy Doggie boy: Run along!

The "if" in your question is the problem, NBS. You're too busy pushing your "anyone can do it" idiocy to notice what happened with Reuters when they let "anyone" do it.

Editorial control is important. If you want the VNR/fake/slanted news station, go try to find work there. (FYI, I think it's called Fox...but that's another discussion.)

Oh please, the Reuters photo? Are you freaking kidding me? Reuters had full editorial control and they dropped the ball. (EDIT: Actually, I read that the photo got fed directly by the stringer, in which case there was no editorial control - which is really farking stupid to do IMHO) I (STILL) fail to see what that has to do with WKRN seeking video submissions from bloggers. If a blogger pulls a "Reuters" on WKRN and it makes air then that will be Sechrist's problem won't it? If a news organization values it's credibility it will make sure any viewer submissions they recieve are legit. That's why guys like me can't sell without a SOT from an official here - too many dishonest moes were trying to make a quick buck by making mountains out of spot news molehills, and that was going on long before I ever hit the scene.

Sechrist is a blogger. Hence the idea. It's really nothing more complicated than that. He probably was offered by one of his blogger buddies to do a news story and he thought hey, there's an idea.... In short, whoopty doo.

Again, the true idiocy at play here is the thought that this is the end of everyone's career. That's just paranoid and silly. What next, you guys? If Rosenblum and Sechrist decide to shoot a reality TV show about the WKRN staff will that mean the end of your career too? Please. If you don't get help at Charter, please - get help somewhere.

You people don't have cancer, stop showing up to the support group.

But alas, anything to cause a little drama around here. Lets use extreme examples and take people's words out of context. I swear to Christ that most of you write for Fox News.

Hey I got an idea! Lets hijack this thread with a debate about Fox News!

Actually no, lets get back on topic, what was it again? Oh yeah!

That is not correct. I'll vouch for him on that.

NBS is an old-timer that dates back to the days when Billy (Swoop) Conduit prowled this board. They used to get into spirited discussions. NBS used a different handle back then though.

And speaking of M.R., welcome back. Decide to slum for a while with the full-size camera photogs?
