I wish they had done more of that. Like with the finished shot next to the roller blades, that came out real good. I might try doing it myself.

I think your speaking in English. What's that incredibly strange accent all about?

That’s just how us New Zealanders sound... English update v1.5

In all the shoots and work I've done I've never seen a photog on skates- that is a ****ing great idea/skill to have.

The rollerblades give an interesting look. Faster and slightly edgier than off a rig but still steady enough for the FX guys to do their stuff. Done wrong it looks awful. The trick is to work out the end shot. This one was easy because of the pace of the sequence we were cutting out of a moving shot. That’s breaking one of the “rules” but it worked in this case. Normally if I’m bladeing I get a run up, set the camera so it’s framed before the shot would start then hold the tracking shot while braking to a smooth static end frame… and that’s why not many people shoot off rollerblades.

If you remember long tracking shots of people lining the streets in the morning for Diana’s funeral, chances are that was shot by me on rollerblades. The cops had closed the streets to traffic and ITN wanted some tracking shots, so out I went. Up until then nobody took them seriously. :)

Well it is a great idea and you do it well. Had I not seen the behind the scenes footage I would have thought it had to be a very good dolly crew getting those shots. Cheers!

You should rent a skateboarding/rollerblading video. They do it all the time. Slap on a wideangle and roll right along with subject matter. They even do it guerilla style on the street.

I used to use a skateboard for dolly shots in college. Dolly crews were too expensive (and non existent in my area), we were too cheap to rent a wheelchair, and we all had skateboards. I actually prefer them to rollerblades because you kind of get a back and forth bobbing on ‘blades. On a skateboard, you can cut after a good hard pump and just use the part when you’re coasting.

I've seen boards and made the skate videos, but I've never seen it done on a professional shoot, and haven't met many shooters who could skate for that matter.

Just the same on the blades and you can "ped" up and down.
Plus I'm crap on a board. :)
