I used to get calls all the time. Produce a pilot on spec. I took a page from a former employer. I'll charge for the pilot and if it goes I'll discount that amount off the total of producing the whole series. I don't get so many calls about doing stuff on spec anymore.

Sean, I like your approach. Like you, I don't get many calls for spec work. But, I'll use it next time that I do.

There is also a problem with businesses asking us to work "for trade." My family can't live off of "trade." And, usually what they are offering is worth much less than my normal rate for the job.

Now, can we start a "No Deferred" campaign for all of those indy folks out there?
